Grocery store chains like Stater Bros. in Southern California have
clearly designated areas to deposit your used plastic bags.
Customers like Brian Alvarez who saves all his plastic bags from the
store and brings them in once a week say it's a step in the right
direction for big companies to reduce the amount of plastic being
used.
His wife Gloria added, ?Departments stores should follow suit. I
save all my shopping retail bags to reuse around the house. If they
had a designated area for recycling, we would bring those in too.?
While many grocery store chains are voluntarily providing recycling
bins for plastic bags, some cities in the U.S. like Tucson, Arizona
want to make it mandatory for all grocery stores in the city to have
recycling bins.
Wilson Hughes with the City of Tucson says, "We want the citizens to
know that all the stores are on board with this."
Some stores like Target, printed plastic bags with ideas on how to
recycle them when you're done using them. For example, using it as a
trash can liner, or to hold your kids? lunches. Customers like the
Alvarez's hope that preaching awareness also helps customers use
less plastic. Gloria added, ?I usually don't even take a plastic bag
if I'm buying one or two things at the store. I figure, there's no
need for a bag to carry a couple bottles of vitamins that I can just
carry in my purse. Most people would just throw a bag away after
that, which would end up in a landfill after being used just once.?
The Alvarez's have expressed hope that their cites follow the kinds
of laws Tucson is planning to implement.
