Childbirth: Your Birthing Options
Brittney Foster
In the United States, there are a large number of women who will give birth this year. Whether you are planning on having a child in the immediate future or later on if life, it is advised that you plan ahead. This planning should not only include the care that you will receive throughout your pregnancy, but the birthing process as well.
The first step in preparing for childbirth is to find a healthcare professional who can offer you assistance throughout your entire pregnancy, this assistance also includes childbirth. Unfortunately, many women are unaware of the fact that different healthcare professionals operate in different ways. In addition to offering different levels of pregnancy care, many healthcare professionals handle the childbirth process in different ways. This is why it important to familiarize yourself with all of your available options. If you are unsure as to which option is the best for you and your baby, you are advised to schedule a consultation appointment with a certified-nurse midwife, your primary care physician, as well as an obstetrician. After these meetings have taken place, you should be able to make a well informed decision.
An obstetrician, also commonly known as an Ob-Gyn, is a healthcare professional that has area of expertise in parental care, as well as childbirth. Most Ob-Gyns will have their own offsite offices, but many will work in conjunction with local hospitals. This partnership means that there is a good chance that your Ob-Gyn will be on call or present in the devilry room, when you go into labor. In the event that your Ob-Gyn is unable to make it, you may be given another Ob-Gyn from the same healthcare office.
In addition to obstetricians, primary care physicians, also commonly referred to as family physicians, can also offer you assistance with prenatal care and childbirth. Like many of the above mentioned obstetricians, your primary care physician should also partner with your local hospital. This means that when you go into labor, they may already be on call. In the event that your primary care physician is not at the hospital and will be unable to make it, you will often be provided with another alternative. In many cases, this alternative is an Ob-Gyn, who specializes in the successful delivery of children.
Although it is nice to be a hospital for your childbirth, especially in the event that anything should go wrong, there are women who feel more comfortable giving birth in another location or facility. If this is the case with you, you may want to consider obtaining the services of a certified nurse-midwife. Certified nurse-midwives typically plan for childbirth at an alternative location, such as their own office, or at home. Whether you are looking for a more comfortable birthing center environment or an in-home birth, you should able to find a number of local certified nurse-midwives that can provide you with you are looking for.
When choosing one of the above mentioned healthcare professionals, it is important to keep in mind the location of your delivery. This does not just mean determining whether or not you will give birth at home or at a hospital, but where those locations are. It is advised that you seek out birthing centers that are within a reasonable driving distance to your home or place of work. If you are unable find a local birthing center, you are advised to prepare for the unexpected.
The unexpected, when it comes to childbirth, may involve a birth without a professional on hand. By speaking to healthcare professional or by examining online medical resources, you should easily be able to prepare yourself for the possibility of having to give birth without your pregnancy care provider present. Even if you are within a reasonable distance to your birthing center, it is still advised that you familiarize yourself with at-home child births. This may prevent you and those around you from becoming overwhelmed in event of an emergency.
