1) Sunlight exposure: Wearing sun protection factor on your lip whether by lip balm or spf sunscreen protection lotion is important. The lip is skin and we often neglect this when we are out in the sun. My first cold sore arose right after going to the beach and that spot is now vulnerable. By wearing some spf on your lip you will help protect the area.
2) Very cold temperatures: In winter months, be sure to moisturize your lips. I have seen a lot of clients in psychotherapy who mentioned that having chapped lips and then being exposed to cold winter air gave them a cold sore on the lip.
3) Low immune system: Being on the brink of a cold or flu can be a time that someone gets a cold sore. Your body's defenses are down and not operating at their full capcacity. Take some supplements such as vitamin C, a good multi and lysine to protect yourself.
4) Steroid pills: Sometimes we need steroids due to rashes or other inflammations. These can lead to cold sore eruptions for some people so check with your doctor about this.
5) Hormonal Changes: Both pregnancy as well as the menstrual cycle can be a time when a cold sore can blossom. The best thing you can do is to take supplements for your body and include lysine to protect the amino acid ratio. Be cautious about too much argine as that can throw off the amino acid balance.
