President George W. Bush approved funding for two college grants known as the National Smart Grant and Academic Competitiveness Grant. More than $700 million dollars is collected especially for these grants. The idea behind the new college grants is to encourage students to pursue a major in the mathematics, science, and technology fields. They are qualified to receive the Pell Grant. (College students who are given the National Smart Grant may also apply the Pell Grant to college tuition.).

They are a citizen of the U.S.

They have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average.

They have declared a major in engineering, science, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is awarded to both first and second year college students. Freshman students could collect as much as $750 toward tuition fees and sophomores could be awarded as much as $1300. College students could be eligible to receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:

They are currently enlisted full-time as either a first or second year student in a 2-4 year program.

They have finished a strict high school plan of study as specified by the national education requirements and standards.

They maintained a cumulative 3.0 GPA during their first year. (For sophomore students)

They are a U.S. citizen.

They graduated from high school later than January 1, 2006 for freshmen and January 1, 2005 for second year students.

If college students don't meet the guidelines for the National Smart Grant or the Academic Competitiveness Grant, there are many other college government grants available. Requirements dependent upon the type of grant. Students may be eligible to receive a college grant based on financial need, academic accomplishment, or athletic ability. Others can get a college grant based on their area of study, religion, or ethnicity.
