One important thing to remember is that you are not selling an item as much as you are selling your business and the type of transaction that your customers can expect from you. If someone really is after an item, it will sell itself, so it is your store and your reputation that people are "buying."
One of the easiest ways to attract attention is by making your listings colorful and fun. Having an attractive template and well-produced photographs will help you stand out from the "black and white" listings that abound. Be creative and have fun with your listings.
Another way to catch buyers' attention is by creating a marketing campaign. This does not have to be difficult or take up to much time. It can be as simple as a digital flier that advertises what items you have to sell and where they can be purchased. You could circulate the flier amongst customers after they purchase items or post it on free marketing websites.
You can also set up a loyalty program for your existing customers. Offer discounts for multiple items, free shipping, or a certain percentage off every X amount of dollars spent. It is easier to maintain existing customers than to find new ones, so making sure you have happy customers and good transactions is very important. You can also set up a mailing list so that you can advertise to all of your customers at one time. You can even offer the people on the list special discounts. Another good technique is to reward existing customers with referral bonuses. Give them discounts or rewards if they refer a friend to your store and that friend purchases an item.
Marketing can be easy with a little effort and creativity. If you set aside some time each week (or every other week) to devote to marketing you can build upon your success and keep your eBay business growing. Just remember that marketing is an on-going process, so it is important not to abandon your efforts after a little success. The more effort you put into marketing, the faster your business will grow.
