Where Can I Travel In The Comoros?
Limotek.co.uk
The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa on the northern end of the Mozambique Channel between northern Madagascar and north-eastern Mozambique. Comoros is the third smallest nation in Africa with a population estimate of 800,000 inhabitants who officially speak Comorian, Arabic or French. The island is also notable for a diverse culture and history, as a nation formed at the crossroads of many civilizations.
Visitors who usually check in via the airports and few through water could make their way round by air since each island has an airfield. Travellers can hire motorboats, sailing crafts, and canoes or employ ferry services. Bush taxis, hired vehicles, or private vehicles are the only forms of road transport on the island. Staying in Comoros necessitates lightweight cotton and linen clothing since this area is usually hot and very humid.
Although accommodation on the Comoros is being upgraded, there are some hotels and guesthouses located mostly in Moroni and Mutsamudu, which handle the needs of travelling business people, government officials and other visitors. Enjoy a day out by paying the restaurants a visit which serves some sumptuous food with spiced sauces and rice based dishes. National specialities which visitors could take pleasure in include cassava, plantain, couscous, barbecued goat meat and delicious seafood. Take note that there may be restrictions on drinks within the Muslim circles. Don't hesitate to do some shopping at Moroni on Ngazidja where you'll get Comoran products which include gold, pearl, and shell jewellery, woven cloth, embroidered skull caps (kofia), and slippers, pottery and basketry. Shops often remain open until late in the night.
You have a myriad of things you can marvel at or enjoy doing. The capital Grande Comore is a charming, peaceful town containing fine mosques like the Vendredi mosque, modern government buildings as well as old, narrow, winding streets and a market place. A walk along these places will leave indelible memories. The more energetic and fit hikers can climb Mount Karthala while those with a liking for adventure can fish at Itsandra village which also hosts a fine beach with opportunities to see fine dances by local men. Visit and marvel at the hot sulphur springs at Lac Sale or the fine waterfall at Miringoni. Discover the local wildlife like the giant and green turtle. Nzwani (Anjouan) is notable for its waterfalls and abundant vegetation. If you need to have fun, then Bimbini area which has best beaches is the place to be. The French administered island, Mahore (Mayotte) is surrounded by an outstanding coral reef, some good beaches and excellent scuba diving facilities. Here you have the privilege of benefiting from excellent diving in the archipelago or simply hire sailing boats or canoes for a ride in the sea.
As a visitor, you are guaranteed of being trouble free. It's also advisable to take sensible precautions against pickpockets, muggers and not walk unaccompanied in town centres at night. Be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate international terrorist attacks which could be waged against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.
Whatever the place you visit which include Ngazidja (Grand Comore), Mwali (Moheli), Nzwani (Anjouan) and Mahore (Mayotte), the major islands in the Comoros archipelago, or the many islets, you'll definitely find something to keep you entertained.
