Charlie Brown & Snoopy
Phoenix Delray
Charlie Brown is the main character in Charles M. Schulzs comic strip Peanuts. Since the comic strips debut in 1950, there have been movies and television shows based around the lovable loser Charlie Brown. The character of Charlie Brown is filled with endless determination and a passion for everything that he does.
These character traits are great, but what makes Charlie Brown such a lovable guy is that he is constantly bombarded with his own insecurities. His insecurities and awkward tendencies are what make him so easy to relate to; he seems so real.
Charlie Brown is always the nicest character which results in his friends taking advantage of him all the time. All of these character traits and scenarios are seen best through the baseball team that is featured in the comic strip. Charlie Brown acts as the team manager, but more importantly, he is the pitcher. The team is known for always losing every game they play and Charlie Brown is consistently portrayed as the worst and clumsiest pitcher alive. Just about every time Charlie Brown pitches the ball, a hit is returned that either knocks him right off the mound or leaves him with nothing but his shorts still on.
None of the players on the team are particularly good, but Snoopy, the dog of Charlie Brown, is the best and most competent on the entire team. Throughout the history of the Peanuts Gang, the only games that the team ever wins are when Charlie Brown is not playing. If Charlie Brown is ever depicted as being a success at something he does, something always inevitably happens that cheapens his victory and ultimately adds to his ongoing insecurities.
Another running theme throughout the story of Charlie Brown is his hobby of flying kites. He flies a kite, the same kite, in many different storylines, but each time it lands in a kite eating tree which becomes a long running joke. There are a few instances however; that he actually succeeds in getting his kite to stay in the air, but something always inevitably happens to steal his thunder. It is situations like these that make Charlie Brown the blockhead he is and always make him susceptible to ridicule from the other characters.
Lucy, the older sister of Charlie Browns best friend Linus, belittled Charlie Brown more than any other Peanut character. She was known for always referring to the two of them as blockheads. At the end of the day though, all of the characters cared for one another and were linked together by a common thread.
