Sightseeing In Venice
Gen Wright
Venice is a truly unique city. It consists of majestic ancient buildings and monuments, and the only way to travel in Venice, is by sailing through the network of canals. There are no roads in Venice - only canals. There are many magnificent sights, and if you ever grow tired from all the sight seeing, you can always stop over at one of the restaurants for meals or refreshments. Here are some interesting sights that you can consider visiting.
St. Mark's Square
This is perhaps the most well known among all the tourist destinations. St. Mark's Square is a huge and majestic looking building that looks more like a castle from far. In reality, it's true function is to house all the important offices in Venice.
Academia Gallery
The mood of romance has always filled the city of Venice. For sure, there have been many talented artists who have left their footprints in this city of romance and art. To witness the works of many famous Venetian artists, you will have to step into the Academia Gallery - the Art Gallery of Venice. This is not just your ordinary art gallery. Only masterpieces are being displayed here. The works are arranged in chronological order.
Correr Museum
The Correr Museum is another interesting destination. The entire building is a work of art. Venetian painter Giuseppe Borsato worked on the interiors of the building himself. The building is named after Teodoro Correr, who was one of the most passionate art collectors in those days.
Rialto Bridge
This is one of the oldest bridge you will ever see. Before this bridge was built, there was no way to cross the Grand Canal. To solve this problem, a bridge was constructed by Nicolo Barattieri.
Salute Church
During early 17th Century, a terrible plague broke out. No one seemed to be able to tell where the plague came from, and no one had a cure for the terrible plague. As a result, the population started to decrease. Desperate for help, the citizens turned to religious faith. A pronouncement was made, saying that if the city could be saved, the most beautiful church would be built.
As if by divine instructions, the plague appeared to slow down immediately. A few weeks later, the plague seemed to have completely disappeared!
In ancient times, when science was not as advanced as today, it was natural for people to be superstitious and turn to religion for help. That seemed like the only thing they could do. So to honor the pronouncement, and fearing that the Gods would be provoked if they did not do so, the biggest and most beautiful church was built.
The Salute Church is truly a work of art, and it's a testimonial of what religious faith is capable of achieving.
