Sardinia: One Island, A Thousand Lands
Anna Barbieri
This Island is Sardinia ! Located in the very center of the Mediterranean sea, it offers a variety of landscapes such as: dunes, ancient mountains, primordial forests, land similar to the nearby Africa, deep canyons, mediterranean shrubs, cliffs, rivers and granite rocks carved by the wind all surrounded by the most transparent Mediterranean waters hiding the secrets of an ancient land. Sardinia is most certainly all this and much more than this. Even those who have been here before learned that it is still possible to drive for miles and sail for hours along the charming coasts, with nature as the only companion of their journey
You will be amazed by the range of landscapes you are likely to come across, cities of incredible culture and exciting tourist resorts. Some of the best and most famous beaches of the Mediterranean sea are here in Sardinia, along the celebrated Costa Smeralda. This is a popular location on the North-West of the island, well-known for the beauty and elegance of its architecture and the high quality standard of the services. The south of Olbia is an explosion of fantastic seaside resorts such as Capo Comino and San Teodoro and towards the north coast you can find the pleasant town of Santa Teresa di Gallura. The beach of la Pelosa is only 4km from Stintino, a small fishing and tourist village located in the very north-west of the Island. Further down the coast from Stintino you will find Alghero with a lovely waterfront and suggestive views. In places like Oristano the beaches are so beautiful that during the peak season they can only be visited by a limited number of people. Also worth seeing are “Is Arenas" and “Is Arutas" the other two beaches on the province of Oristano and both part of the Costa Verde (Green coast). Some other stunning beaches are to be found in the South of Sardinia along the coast and very close to the city of Cagliari, such as Chia and Villasimius. Sardinia is also famous for the largest and breathtaking grottoes in all of the Mediterranean Area. The Bue Marino (Seal cave) cave (grotto) near Cala Gonone is a valuable example. It is the largest and most famous in Sardinia for its size and the height of some of its rooms and it can only be reached by sea in good weather conditions. The name of this grotto/cave, comes from the nickname given to the monk seal. The “Neptune caves" are also easy to get to either by sea or on foot walking down the 656 steps for more than 100 meters. The low season is highly recommended to visit the caves in order to avoid crowds. Marine and Natural Parks are spread all over the island for over 490.000 hectares. as well as numerous old mining villages. Sulcis is the most important mining area recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Tavolara is an amazing limestone island, just a few km from Olbia Airport and also close to two important Marine Parks. Further on there is the natural park of La Maddalena, a spectacular archipelago between Sardinia and Corsica with numerous islands.
In the center of Sardinia the huge park of Gennargentu can be found, the ideal home for flora and fauna conservation, while in the North-West at the very top of Sardinia you will find the island and natural park of Asinara which was a prison for many years until the late nineties, leaving this land completely unspoilt.
