The concept of evolution is as old as civilization itself is. From very ancient times philosophers have speculated about the nature and origin of everything seen around. Many of them paid considerable attention to the origin of life, and came to speculations similar to the present notion of evolution.
Basically two types of people developed ideas related to evolution. The first category includes a whole group of philosophers who were mainly theists but who developed their philosophy without taking into consideration the creative activity of God. Second, there have always been some philosophers who felt compelled to develop such a theory because basically they were atheists. To them even the suggestion of supernatural creation was repulsive, and hence they tried to explain everything in terms of nature and natural forces alone.
A number of historical reasons combined together in the last few centuries to produce a large number of atheistic who reasoned everything in terms of Nature. However, their speculation was confined to the philosophical level even till the middle of the last century. This was their weakest point. Scientific thought at that time had advanced to such a level that they realized that if the concept of evolution is true, it must now be expressed in acceptable scientific terms -- not in terms of mere philosophical speculations. All over the world of learning there was an air of expectation, and it was at this ripe time that Charles Darwin put forward his version of the scientific hypothesis. It was only natural for him to receive the glory reserved for a hero.
Darwin was a careful observer of nature, and when he wrote down his conclusions he was quite restrained in his statements. Because of this, anyone who reads his books will find how he clearly mentions the problems facing his hypothesis. However, the people of his generation did not show the same scientific temper, but instead they embraced the theory without any scientific restraint at all. To them here was a fact of science even though Darwin had clearly stated it to be a mere hypothesis.
We should perhaps forgive most of these enthusiasts. Many of them were victims of the prevailing anti-supernaturalism of that generation. Others were taken in to believe this theory because
the sciences needed to analyze these matters were not sufficiently developed. They were not in a position to critically evaluate the propositions of this theory. According to their understanding, randomness and blind chance were the factors responsible for evolution. They thought that the longer the time that is available for evolution, the greater is the possibility of order arising out of disorder. But today we know the subject better and there is no excuse for ignorance.
Numerous phenomena around us take place without any plan, and mathematicians have developed the mathematical tools necessary to study such phenomena. With the help of this mathematics, the outcome of a random (unplanned) phenomena can be understood and predicted with certainty. According to these studies, whenever nature is left to itself, random processes working in it take it in a definite direction -- from a state of order to that of disorder. This is just the opposite of what is demanded by the proponents of evolution and there is no escaping it: left to itself, matter always goes from order to disorder and not the other way round.
Bottles of medicines always come with instructions to keep the cap tightly closed and also to store the bottle away from direct light. Some of them come with even more stringent stipulations. This is because air or light reacting with the medicine destroys the highly ordered and complex molecules of medicines. If left like this, ultimately all the complex chemicals break down making the medicine ineffective, or even poisonous.
People often think that the more the time that is available, the higher the probability for a particular event to occur. This is right for a single event, but evolution is not a single event; millions of events have to take place even to evolve the first cell. But when the probability of such an event is considered, there is no probability at all for it. On the contrary, there is full certainty all the order will be destroyed if billions years are granted to blind chance.
Order can be obtained only when several conditions are satisfied: first, there should be a plan to convert disorder into order; second, there should be a mechanism to act upon this plan; and third, a sufficient amount of the right type of energy should be available to put this plan into action. This means that the scenario of evolution taking place by blind chance is only an illusion. Order needs a plan, and plan needs a planner. It is much more reasonable to believe that the unbelievable amount of order found in this universe is the result of the plan originating in the mind of the supreme creator.
