A Potter's Life: Josiah Spode
Herbert Reich
Josiah Spode, born in 1733, sought his artistic path through making English pottery. He came from a small village, Stoke-on-Trent, which is part of Staffordshire. At six, he was orphaned and while it must have been devastating, it was probably something Josiah was used to when it came to riches-his father was poor and buried in a pauper's grave. At 16, Josiah began an as an apprentice working for Thomas Whieldon, who was considered a top potter. Spode's artistic pottery designs were remarkable even at a young age and at 21 years of age, Josiah left Whieldon's workshop and collaborated with other potters in the area. Many are surprised to know that Josiah was also an accomplished violinist. He was often invited to celebrations where, as a violinist, played with clarity, beauty and, magical rhythm.
Though uncertain, his passion for pottery literally paid off when, in 1767, he opened his first shop. Spode pottery remains the oldest pottery shop in England today. He married Ellen Findley in 1754 and with Ellen, had eight children. Another of his accomplishments was his dedication of land alongside his factory. This new waterway was used to transport much needed raw materials. Beyond that, Josiah had a better avenue for moving his pottery pieces, something that had been difficult prior to the waterway.
One of his children, appropriately name Josiah Spode II, was taught the pottery process and was a potter in his own right, but he seemed to shine when it came to selling. Aware of his son's selling skills, Josiah sent his son to London to open a Spode pottery showroom and shop. There, Josiah learned from his son, that exquisite pottery would be expected of them for the high-society people they wanted as customers.
During this period, Josiah perfected blue underglaze printing and developed the formula for bone china. Both of these were considered unique and became much desired pottery products in London-Josiah had captured his high-society market and was thriving. Considered to be generous and caring, and friendly, Josiah's business grew and when he died in 1797 he left a house to Ellen who died in 1802. The house called Mill at Stoke also contained his original pottery factory. To Josiah II, he left the meadow adjoining the Mill at Stoke and to this day, part of the Spode factory is still called Meadow.
Many of Josiah's works were inspired by Japanese designs and the bone china formula he utilized is still the most desirable and used to this day. Spode's blue and white china was praised for the creativity of its design and was enhanced by genre scenes of exotic characters such as tigers. The uniqueness and beauty of Spode's china is still sought all over the world. His intricate patterns and beautiful crystals the Spode name is associated with are top collectors items. With the creation of a dinnerware line, the world has Josiah and the Spode family to thank giving us all the opportunity to own a precious part of his art and life.
