From New York To D.C., Stay At Mid-Atlantic's Best Inns, Hotels
Tess Kirkpatrick
The Mid-Atlantic region of the United States offers travelers a multitude of interesting destinations, from the skyscrapers of New York City to the gentle, rolling hills of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, there are plenty of vacation options.
One of the easiest ways to approach a vacation is to plan an itinerary -- a step-by-step plan of your journey including maps, places to visit and your lodging choices. You might decide to spend your vacation in New York City or perhaps head off the beaten path for a tour of the Delmarva Peninsula, which includes parts of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
Planning a trip to this exciting region can be tough, but travel expert Karen Brown has made the task much easier. On her popular website, Brown outlines nearly a dozen unique itineraries for visitors to the Mid-Atlantic States. Karen Brown readers also chose the following hotels and inns as the best lodgings in the Mid-Atlantic:
The innkeepers at the Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel have set the stage for your next romantic getaway. Located in Taneytown, Maryland, the former plantation home has been meticulously restored to reflect all its former glory. The romantic guest chambers in the main house are filled with fine furnishings and the beds are topped with soft, feather comforters. Most of the rooms have a fireplace and some have a clawfoot or Jacuzzi tub. There also are more than two dozen other accommodations spread among the 24 acres, located in unique outbuildings, all of which boast romantic period dcor and a fireplace. This historic Maryland inn was chosen as the "Most Romantic" lodging in the Mid-Atlantic region by Karen Brown readers.
The Inn at Turkey Hill offers travelers a little bit of everything, including economical accommodations with plenty of extras. The centerpiece of this inn is the historic main house, built in 1839, which houses a tavern, gourmet restaurant and two bed and breakfast rooms. More than a dozen rooms and suites are located in a newer addition which surrounds the inn's courtyard. Deluxe rooms with double whirlpool tubs are located in The Stable. Guest rooms are stocked with amenities such as fluffy robes and luxury bath products. Karen Brown readers have chosen this Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, inn as the Mid-Atlantic's "Greatest Value."
The Inn at Warner Hall is located on a former plantation that was founded by George Washington's great-great-grandfather. The Gloucester, Virginia, inn is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and within easy driving distance to several important historic attractions, including the early settlement of Jamestown and the site of the Battle of Yorktown. The innkeepers have restored their historic home with loving attention to detail. Each of the eleven guest rooms features a selection of fine antiques; several rooms include a fireplace or a spa tub. Breakfasts are served in a lovely glassed-in porch. Warner Hall was chosen by Karen Brown readers as the recipient of the Mid-Atlantic's "Warmest Welcome" award.
A stay at Hotel Plaza Athenee could spoil you for any other place. Located on Manhattan's stylish Upper East Side just a block from Central Park, the boutique hotel offers rooms and suites with an elegant European design. The city and park views are equally impressive, and a few suites even offer private balconies or indoor atriums. A drink in the intimate Bar Seine is a must, with its charming mix of dcor that is part Paris, part Casablanca. Arabelle, the hotel's romantic restaurant, serves breakfasts, an opulent afternoon tea, and offers a lunch and dinner menu filled with gourmet treats. The hotel was chosen by Karen Brown readers as the Mid-Atlantic's top "Splendid Splurge.
