Improve The Usability Of Your Website By Using Colour
Sherryll Juarres
Being aware that some colours could provoke an emotional response is the key to choosing the correct colours for a website. knowing what colours have a calming effect and which provoke excitement can make choosing a colour scheme very easy.
Colours can also be used to create contrast and emphasis to a design. this can direct users to specific bits of a website.
Below is a brief guide to how some colours affect emotions & perceptions.
Green is associated with nature, peace and jealousy. it is also a truly relaxing colour and is brilliant to use for a soothing effect.
White stirs up feelings of pureness, simplicity, emptiness and innocence. if used as a site's main colour, it creates a clean & simple feel.
Blue is most commonly associated with with corporate sites because it is a strong colour that's associated with confidence, coldness, depression, water and peace.
Associated with feelings of cold, royalty, peace and air, blue is the most popular colour for business sites. Itcreates a very different reaction to red.
Green symbolises nature, environment, peace and luck. Green is a great colour to use for a soothing effect.
Representative of joy, happiness, warning and energy, yellow has a similar effect to red, even though it is not as top. it can be used to highlight areas of a site. However, if too much is used, it can be an overpowering colour.
Purple is linked with royalty, indulgence and luxury. it isn't an often used colour in website design, probably because it is known as a girly colour.
Creating the idea of earthiness, disposition and poverty, brown is extremely similar to green because it can be used to give the site a relaxed feel.
The colour orange is really young but also warm, stimulating & friendly. used in websites, it's also welcoming.
Grey is a popular colour for backgrounds for web sites. like black, it is credible for highlighting images & it creates credible contrast between different colours.
It's clear that colours don't just make a site look beautiful, although they also have an underlying effect of user experience & can dictate how successful a website can be. picking the right colours can evoke a site that users can discover & will make them more willing to use, explore & promote the site to pals. getting the colour choices wrong can put users off & have them leave your site for somebody elses.
