Why Are Dancers Rejected At Auditions & Castings?
Ryan Heddik
But for the most part it's quite straight forward. So there'll always be people who will be very happy and are successful at an audition. Then there's the flip side of not getting the job which pretty much every dancer has or will experience at some point.
So what are the reasons for a dancer getting rejected? A dancer may get rejected because they didn't pick up the choreography well enough, their dancing style wasn't what the client was after, their image wasn't what the judges had in mind or because they're too short or their hair is the wrong colour or length.
A dancer may be passed over for the part for something as small as getting one step wrong in the choreography, not smiling enough, having the wrong colour t-shirt, having bad pictures.
Every time a dancer goes to an audition, whoever will be deciding the outcome of the audition has an idea in their head of what type of dancers they are looking for from the audition. Every different person has a different idea of what they want. Sometimes the same choreographer will have a different idea of what they want from day to day depending on the project.
In reality a dancer is not really being rejected as opposed to being told that they're not right for the part whatever that may be, or that there's just not enough parts. Very talented dancers get passed over for parts all the time, its part of the job.
All a dancer can do when they go to an audition or casting is make sure they are well prepared, dance to the best of their ability, and try and offer the client what they want in terms of dancing style, image and personality.
Very often the reasons for dancers not getting picked may seem very petty. If you were able to hear their discussions you may hear things like 'we don't need another blonde' or 'she's too good a dancer' (yes, really!).
So it's best not to worry about this part of the casting, but rather go to every one and give it the best you got. One day you'll get a part you really want and then start analysing the reasons why they decided to pick you instead!
Ryan Heddik has enjoyed a successful dance career dancing on TV numerous times and is the author of the groundbreaking e-book The book teaches aspiring dancers the exact process they can follow to find work in music videos with tried and tested principles that actually work.
