Do Students Keep Up With Their Calculus?
Robert Duval
We all know that calculus can be a real nightmare, and even the smartest among us can suffer with it. At any level, Calculus has difficulties that many times prove themselves to be formidable hurdles and help is a must. In these modern times help can be found in a variety of ways such as personal tutoring or also by using other aids such electronic calculators, computers or the even theinternet.
Calculus is a very refined math that studies the ways that things can change. Calculus provides the structures for the modeling of systems in which there is change, and it also allows to deduce the predictions based on such models. Yet Calculus is a wonderfully applied science, which helps solving some very concrete problems. This duality is perplexing indeed, and creates confusion among students. In fact, it is quite common for calculus students to be in need of help with their homework, as experience can tell.
It results hard for students to reach out help though. It may be the most logical thing to do to look for an academic advisor's help, but sometimes they will not understand what the student really need and they will end up referring her to the help offered by the shoool, which is a little bit more of the same. Most high schools and colleges have tutors in a variety of subjects for free or a nominal fee. Remedial tutoring is not always enough. It may be necessary to hire a private tutor to review all the fundamental ideas before going any practical matter.
The origins of Calculus as a science dates from the Greeks by 3000 B.C. The evolution of its concepts has been blazingly fast and smooth, reaching the highest point in the 18th and 19th century. For the Greeks the foundation of Calculus is based on the concept of number, which in turn is strongly based in applied geometry. For them, the numbers were ratios of integers, which correspond to the rational numbers as we know as of today. It was an amazing discovery for them to realize that the numbers expressed as the ratio of integers was not enough and it had ?holes??Enter the irrational numbers. From the numbers the main topic of study moved toward physically oriented phenomena such as the law of gravitational force, discovered by Issac Newton.
Calculus courses are not normally taken until late in high school or even in the universities, so a student who is in need of help with calculus homework should be mature enough to recognize this need and seek help as soon as possible. Calculus is not something that can be learned quickly. It starts out with basic concepts and builds on them. Once a student starts to fall behind, waiting too long may end up in being too far behind to catch up in time. With the proper extracurricular calculus help it is possible to level the field for the less math-skilled students. They need to feel that they are not falling behind the rest of the class.
Being new to Calculus students are more error-prone and it is not uncommon to see that they are very lost. Nevertheless, with the proper help the order can be reestablished and students can be brought back on track. Reinforcing the concepts, formulas, and theories over and over until they are ingrained is the idea behind most calculus homework.
