Get Charmed By Pushkar Festivals
Rajendra Sharma
The word festival kicks us up with happiness, whenever it is mentioned. We wait for festivals eagerly, as they are associated with auspicious things and luck. Here, we are not talking about regular festivals, often related to religion, but a kind of festival that has its own importance and significance. Yes, you got it right! It is indeed Pushkar festivals, India that are celebrated with full jest.
Pushkar festivals are associated with the colorful culture of Rajasthan. In fact, you can say that it infuses life and spirit in the carnival that makes it special and distinct from many of the festivals. Well, it is one of the most renowned festivals, which draws a huge number of tourists. Now you must be wondering that how it is celebrated though you have a little knowledge about it. Pushkar festivals in India are celebrated in winters. Although the dates of the festivals are not fixed, but alike other Hindu festivals, Pushkar festival dates are dependent upon the lunar calendar. According to the Hindu almanac, the fair is held during the full moon in the month of Kartik, traditionally in November. Come November, and the desert livens up with the hustle bustle of people and more with cattle and camels.
However, the history of festivals is buried in the myths and hearts of legends of Rajasthan. Believe it or not, the wonderful blend of faith and commerce, pulsating with the beats of festivities, can only be witnessed during this unique festival. To much to an extent that it brightens the true spirit of India. So now you know when to travel to Pushkar to enjoy as well as participate in these nerve cracking festivals. You will be surprised to know that the sleepy town of Pushkar, constitutes population of approximately 11000, and incredibly bulges into approximately 2,00,000 with buyers, sellers, sadhus, tricksters, musicians and of course, tourists. The otherwise dull land seems to have burst into a riot of colors which is more has soothing and rocking affect on the senses. The spectacular fair ground witnesses bedecked camels, decorated cattle, adventures competitions, breathtaking events, jostling rustic crowd, meditating sadhus, holy dip, vivid stalls, exotic fair, colorful desert, so typical, and so obvious, it can be nothing else but awesome Pushkar festivals.
It is an elaborate affair, as tourists and cattle traders from all over the country swarm the place during this carnival or fair. It is amazing to see the traders negotiating deals over their prized animals, such as camels, horses, cows, goats and sheep. In fact, the atmosphere becomes lively on the concluding day as people take dips on the banks of lake while chanting mantras. At dusk, lots of small earthen lamps are lightened and kept on delicate leaf boats and released in the Pushkar Lake, making it gloriously peaceful sight. This brings to an end India's largest camel fair. Thus, this festival is just not about striking deals but is a phenomenon that one experiences during the stay at Pushkar. Hence, do not waste time and make your hotel reservations well at advance as the colorful festival is about to come and you do not want to miss it!
