Cruising To Beautiful Acapulco
Stephanie Larkin
Acapulco is Mexico's largest coastal city, and has been welcoming visitors for as long as vacationers have traveled to Mexico. There is nothing quite like the sight of Acapulco Bay as you cruise in and see the beautiful white sand beaches, or watch as the cliff divers plummet 150 feet into the ocean. Acapulco is full of fun and festivities from morning well into the night, full of activities to keep you going.
Acapulco was first developed in the 16th century as a cornerstone for world trade. Ships traveled across the Pacific Ocean to Acapulco from the Philippines, trading spices, silk and other valuable goods such as stones, pearls and ivory for Mexican silver. Today, it is a main stop on most Mexican Riviera cruises, and its glittering nightlife is enjoyed by visitors from around the world.
There are plenty of beaches to enjoy, so you can explore a new one every day of the week. The picturesque beaches are perfect for relaxing on the pure white sands and sunning in hammocks, or enjoying something a bit more active such as jet skiing or parasailing. Don't miss the daredevil cliff divers of La Quebrada - you may even see them at a nearby chapel saying a prayer before making their spectacular dive from the cliffs. For a bit of history, visit the San Diego Fortress, which is the site of the Acapulco Historical Museum. Here you will find exhibits about Acapulco, along with a fantastic view of the bay.
At the heart of Acapulco you are sure to catch some live music along with some local gossip at the town square. Traditional Mexican architecture abounds, accenting a year round festive flavor. Shopping in Acapulco runs the gamut from traditional Mexican crafts and jewelry to brand name shops at prices lower than you'll find in the United States. However you spend your time at Acapulco, you are sure to come away with fond memories of this bubbly, festive stop on your travels.
