How To Place Tiles Over Fascia
Danpartridge
Many people struggle with placing tiles over their roofs, especially as the fascia help provide support below. The top angle of the tiles is more when compared to the bottom end. This makes installation of tiles over these more difficult. Here are some tips to help you.
Eaves tiles
In the location of eaves, there are no tiles situated. Hence, the tiles placement is over a fascia to support the bottom portion of the tiles. The main edge that comprises the support needs to have the perfect height to provide proper support. The height over the rafter should be the same as batten height along with height of the tile. This helps ensure the perfect alignment of tiles over these fascias.
Sprocket
In situations where the board placement is very high with the tile over it, the tile will have a narrower angle compared to tiles above. Many architects favour sprocket tiles. However, having such tiles can damage the functionality of the roof. If these tiles have reached the pitch limit of the rafter then it can affect roof performance adversely. If the tile placement is not in a parallel manner, it can cause upper tiles to lay against the knife edge tiles. Due to this structure of tile placement, weather bars will need to be placed under the tile. Because of this design, the fascia and the tiles will not be protected from rain. In addition, if the tile is below the true pitch needed, the rainwater can easily get inside the underlay.
The dip
If the board is resting very low, the tiles will have a steep angle compared to tiles placed above. This will not only look bad but will also cause gaps forming between eaves tiles and upper tiles. This will result in accumulation of rainwater in the gap, which will cause damage to the underlay region. There may also be chances of the fascia suffering damage because of rainwater seepage.
Miscellaneous conditions
There are also many other factors that affect tile placement over fascia boards. If there is a ventilation grill placed over the boards, its height may need lowering. Every board has its own height and this is mentioned on the manufacturer label. Some boards can move over gutter in forward direction thus changing the eave tile contact with the grill top. If the forward span of the fascia is more then the board, it will need to be at a lower height. The board thickness coupled with span of eave tile will affect tile placement and angle. If bottom edges of tiles are thicker compared to top edges, this too can affect placement of tiles.
The proper height of fascia
It is critical that the boards have appropriate heights. Usually manufacturers mention the correct height in a tabular manner. This assumes even more importance if ventilation grills need placement over fascia. If you are not able to get a table for reference, draw the details out accurately. Measure the height followed by placement of three battens, then you can place tiles over each other. Take a portion of the board with grill and place with eave tiles to get a better idea.
