In the course of education, one would have to pick up essential language skills. These skills become part of our learning foundation. Only with a strong foundation can we begin to understand other subjects. For example, maths, science, geography, physics, chemistry, and so on all require the user of language skills to comprehend. Without a strong foundation, overcoming learning obstacles become stressful and in extreme cases, almost impossible.

So it makes good sense to pay more attention to learning the English language. The English language can be commonly applied in two ways - the spoken word and the written word. We use this language in our daily activities. We answer emails, correspond over the phone, attend meetings, and so on. Without the use of language, we become stranded.

Often, language is all about self expression. You will be recognized as competent in a language only when you can express yourself both verbally and in writing.

In many educational systems, the essay is used to perfect the writing skills of students. Therefore, it is very common for students to get writing assignments for assessment purposes. These are not just language assignments. You can have assignments such as research papers, term papers, subject specific essays and others. All of which require the student to utilize his or her writing skills.

In doing so, the essay helps to establish two things. One - how the student thinks can be easily established from the ideas expressed in the paper. And two - how well the student is able to express those ideas.

As you can see, both components are important in delivering an excellent piece of writing. Some students have the brightest ideas but without a good command of language, they fail to express their ideas accurately. Some students have a flair for writing, but they may not have the right ideas. But when you combine the two together, you get a powerful combination. This is the reason why the essay is often used as a pedagogical tool.

If you are a student and has been given a written assignment, you will find that you need to overcome these two problems.

First, you will have to brainstorm for ideas as to what to write for your paper. You can overcome this by conducting brain storming sessions with friends or teachers.

Next, you will have to organize and express these ideas using the written word in your paper. If you are not confident about writing, you can always get help by hiring someone else to do this for you. In this case, you have the ideas, but you don't feel comfortable writing the entire paper for yourself. Hiring someone else to write the paper for you will not only help you get better grades but also save you a lot of time. Surely, you can find other areas where you can use more time.

So don't be intimidated by writing assignments. Know that it is purely a pedagogical tool.
