Have Peace Of Mind About Elder Caregiving
Realart
Elderly patients can easily become insecure and disoriented. Hospitalization can make the situation even worse. The unfamiliar surroundings and faces can easily disorient someone already weakened by illness or debilitation. It is for this reason that caregivers are encouraged to provide in-home elder care as much as possible.
The home setting also helps the elderly deal with the uncertainties of their illness and age. As all of us age, we need to come to terms with the full circle of life. When we have an illness at an elderly age, it can raise concerns about the outcome. Caregiving for any elderly patient means having sensitivity to concerns on this level.
Very often an elderly patient lives alone, perhaps because they have already lost a spouse and their children have moved away. Loneliness can amplify and prolong the symptoms of illness. Merely providing companionship is a large part of elderly caregiving.
However, providing companionship is not always an easy task for the caregiver. It takes more than being a games partner or a good listener. The seriousness and number of issues faced by elder patients leads to other problems that can make recovery slower and caregiving more difficult. Many elder patients can be on an emotional roller coaster throughout their illness, maybe riding high when a loved one visits and crashing down when pain and the reality of their situation sets in. To provide good companionship, caregivers for the elderly need to be able to spot and anticipate the highs and lows and quickly adjust and provide moral and emotional support as needed.
Perhaps the most difficult reality faced by many elderly patients is the inability to take care of themselves. It may be the first time in their lives that this is the case. The realization that they are not only sick, but they have lost their independence too, is often very difficult for some patients to accept. Elderly caregiving means not only taking care of patients? ailments, but giving them as much independence as possible while still keeping them comfortable and safe.
Clearly, caregiving for the elderly is not an easy task. Indeed, many caregivers face their own stresses related to elder care. If they are untrained and not fully prepared, they too can feel loneliness, helplessness and frustration, all of which could affect the quality of care they provide.
More and more families faced with the task of caregiving for elderly loved ones are choosing to use professional caregivers, many of which are registered nurses who have specific training in caregiving for the elderly. They understand the issues faced by the patient and they know how to deal with them. Based on their training and the fact that they have no family ties to the patient, a professional caregiver faces fewer issues surrounding caregiving and is better equipped to deal with them.
Qualicare's Personal Care Managers are registered nurses specifically trained in caregiving for the elderly.
