Acne OTC Products: Do They Work?
Robert Kokoska
There are many people who continually ask if the common acne products available from the supermarket actually work. Not so many years ago, you would have to get these products from your local drug store but now with internet shopping in full swing, there are thousands of sources from all over the world ready to ship you their latest products. And I'm sure you have seen some of those infomercials that play late at night that go on about how some amazing doctor created it.
As well as all the topical products out there, there are now a multitude of books and manuals that claim to have found the cure for all of your acne problems. Let's not forget about that home remedy recipe that you can download today for only $8.95. There has also been an increase in "top acne products" lists that apparently have tried and reviewed all of these products by the website owners.
Although It may seem that I am against these products, I actually am not. You just need to be aware that what might work for one person, may not for another as there are many different types of acne and just as many causes. Some people may even have allergic reactions to some of the home remedies. There is no way to know how you will respond to some of the herbs or ointments that people will ask you to mix up in your kitchen. If you do try a home remedy, remember to do a "test spot check" first. Test out the mixture on a very small patch of skin on your thigh or somewhere that's not usually visible.
There are a number of people who opt for the slightly more expensive over-the-counter products as they provide some relief. They have patience and wait for results. These people end up using the product for the duration of their acne, minimizing the severity and redness. Seeing the joyful and sometimes tearful testimonials on those infomercials can sometimes be extremely convincing. Some of them can be worth a try though but you have to pay close attention to the state of your acne to make sure it really is doing something. It should only take a few weeks to see results.
Then there are the common home remedies: Witch Hazel and Benzoyl Peroxide that you can easily get in most drug stores. People who have a mild case of acne usually respond very well to these treatments. They are also less irritable and abrasive than some of the other powerful prescription drugs available.
All of the products contain ingredients that have had a positive effect on some people. Remember that what worked for one person may not work for you. Do your research on products and you will be sure not to buy a similar product that only has a different name. That way you can slowly cancel out all of the remedies until hopefully you can find one that works for you.
