I know from personal experience that it is all too easy to get bogged down and spend all of our time on our daily to do list. No matter what time of day it is, there is always something or someone demanding our attention. If we do not take the time to think strategically, time will pass us by and we will not have accomplished very much.
In order to take the time to think strategically, you need to have a game plan. You can create a game plan for any situation by following the same process that all businesses and companies use to map their path. Do you know what it is called? It's called a business plan. This is be your strategic plan to accomplish whatever may lie in front of you. By laying out all the details, you reduce the risk of failure and increase your chances for success.
There are three main parts to your strategic planning process. I will address these below.
1. You must first take a cold hard look at your situation. Find out what your position is and what the next step might be to move forward. You must make sure that your mind is in the right place and your tasks still have meaning for you. Is there enough motivation and excitement to keep you working?
2. The next step is about dreaming. You need to take some time to figure out what the future holds for you. Try to put your current reality away and dream of the future and where you can go. Write down key points and be honest with yourself about certain tasks and things that need to be accomplished.
3. The last step is about figuring out exactly what you have to do to reach the end goal. It is critical to create a plan that is in line with your vision, being flexible enough to modify your plan in our ever-changing world.
You need to make sure that you stay focused through the good and hard tines. If you really want to achieve your goals, you need to decide up front what you are going to do and how to make it happen. Strategic thinking isn't a gift that you are born with, it is a skill that needs to be practiced and put into play in order for you to benefit from it.
