How To Fix A Frequently Flooded Basement Without Spending Too Much
Isolde Werry
When a house is having flooded basement problems frequently, this means that the basement can no longer be used as a valuable space for storing old family memoirs and memorabilia. This would also mean that the basement is damp and moist during most parts of the year and would probably have mold and mildew growing and spreading throughout the home. These mold and mildew may cause respiratory problems to members of the family. A basement that is frequently flooded can also make the selling of the home almost impossible since nobody would want to buy a house with a damp and musty basement. Fortunately for these homeowners, a flooded basement can be fixed without digging out the basement and spending thousands of dollars to renovate it.
Fixing a frequently flooded basement need not be a tedious and expensive task. Simple tasks such as covering the basement with paint with sealant properly may be enough to ensure a water tight basement and to prevent another flooded basement from occurring. This however, is only applicable if only a small amount of water is seeping through the pores of the foundation walls of the basement.
On the other hand, if the flooded basement is caused by water flowing through small cracks in the basement walls, then the best thing to do is to caulk up the cracks first before painting over the wall with sealant paint.
Homeowners should also investigate where and how the water is flowing in and causing the flooded basement. If water is entering the basement through the sides of the basement windows, then the sides of the windows should be made water tight by applying sealant to them.
Other causes of basement flooding can come from downspouts that are facing the foundation instead of towards the street. Homeowners can remedy this by placing solid yet inexpensive tiles under the downspouts to redirect the flow of water.
Another inexpensive way of preventing a flooded basement is making sure that the lawn or yard is draining water effectively. Ideally, lawns should be sloping towards the street so that excess rain water will runoff towards the main drainage pipes which are usually located under the street gutters. Homeowners should also check if puddles are formed after a downpour. If so, an inexpensive way of correcting this is to dig out water pathways to make the collected water flow towards the street.
Gutters around the home's foundation can cause a flooded basement if it is obstructed and is collecting water rather than letting water flow freely. Removing the blockages from the gutters will ensure that water flows to the sewage or drainage tanks.
Lastly, if the home's basement has a sump pit, homeowners must make sure that the drain tiles are clean and are not obstructed to cause water to collect in the basement.
