Protecting Yourself From A Flooded Basement
Ramona Weisly
When you have a flooded basement, the world can come to a crashing halt. A flooded basement can mean thousands of dollars in property damage. From replacing your personal possessions to rebuilding the foundation, repairs can be very costly. For those who have a finished basement, the cost can get extremely high.
A flooded basement occurs for various reasons:
1 - You can have a water line or pipe that is leaking
2 - You can have inadequate rain gutters
3 - There could be a crack in your walls or foundation
4 - Your property (land) does not have adequate drainage. This can cause what is known as Hydrostatic pressure where the water from the land buildups and has nowhere to go so it places a lot of force on your foundation and causes it to crack under the stress.
5 - Good old Mother Nature has come knocking at your door.
No matter what the reason, no one wants to have to deal with this issue. Not only will it cost you in your pocket book but it can also cost you mentally and physically. What can you do to protect your home from being a flood zone? Well, for starters :
1 - Protection starts by looking at the obvious things.
If you live in a flood zone or not far from an area of water, then look at perhaps building a floodwall to protect you and your home. This won't be 100% effective but it will help lessen the damage.
2 - Check your gutters to make sure they are free from clogs and are properly installed so that the drainage flows as it should.
3 - Is your land prone to excess water buildup? If so, then you add additional dirt to build up your land a correct the water flow.
4 - A flooded basement is not something you look forward to but if you have a finished basement, perhaps looking into covering the floor with tile would be a better option than carpet. This could save you hundreds of dollars in ruined carpeting if the carpet gets ruined.
There are also hidden dangers in addition to property loss. With the excess build up in water and moisture, the flooded area can become a home to mold and mildew. This can cause serious health problems. In addition, did you know that termites and carpenter ants are attracted to wet places? You don't want any new neighbors like that moving in with you.
Damage to a room if not taken care of properly can also lower the resale value of your home. Your home is an investment, so don't lose part of that investment by not taking care of your flood issues right away.
The key to protecting your home and your basement is protection but should you fall victim a flood in your basement, then immediate action will save you in the long run. Be sure to get a company that specializes in this type of damage restoration and be sure to research them though roughly. A flooded basement can be a pain but with a little preparation it doesn't have to be as costly.
