Search Engine Optimisation; A Business Necessity
Thomas Pretty
The term search engine optimisation refers to the process of altering a website, and external links to increase its rankings in search engine listings. The ultimate aim of the optimisation process is to put a website at the number one spot in the listings, the result of being in this position is increased amounts of internet traffic to the site and hence more trade for that particular business. The methods used for optimising websites differ greatly depending upon the company or operator you employ, some of these methods will have a heavy link focus, some may purely focus upon the content of the website while others may incorporate a variety of techniques to ensure success.
The optimisation process is considered by many to be part art, part science. This is because many differing methods manage to produce good results, showing that there is no clearly defined set of rules that will bring high rankings. With so many practitioners out there it is unsurprising that methods differ so greatly, naturally all of these differing methods mean that conjecture and debate within the SEO world is common and sometimes hard fought.
As a company director however it is easy to ask yourself why you would need search engine optimisation? Its importance however cannot be underestimated in the world of online business. Current estimates report that the majority of internet users utilise search engines whenever they are trying to find a product or service. Understandably Google is regarded by many to be the industry leader, taking almost two thirds of the overall searches in any one year. After Google, Yahoo and MSN are second and third respectively in terms of search numbers. The importance of optimisation however is that around seventy percent of users will try the websites in the top three results; while less than five percent will venture past the first page. Subsequently being on the first page of results can be extremely beneficial.
The benefits of being in these high rankings are that your website will receive far more traffic. It is important to understand than none of the pages on the first page are there by accident; all have undergone the optimisation process as part of their online business strategies. No matter what type of industry your business operates in, being at the top, or at least on the first page of search results will drive more traffic to your site and hence, more customers and higher levels of profitability.
Part of the optimisation process is to choose certain keywords that you will attempt to list for. For instance a company that sells cleaning equipment may want to be listed for terms such as 'vacuum cleaners' or 'Hoovers'. These keywords should be used in the content of the website as part of the optimisation process; linking procedures should also use these words if good rankings are to be achieved. The choice of these keywords however should only be done after careful consideration, some key terms are extremely competitive and hence achieving high rankings is difficult. In some cases it may be worth purely focussing on less generic terms during the early phases of optimisation.
It is hoped that this article has given an indication of the importance of search engine optimisation in the modern world of online business. Without SEO achieving success is next to impossible, today it is simply a necessity.
