5 Ways To Recover From Water Damage
Osmund Aft
Water and flood damage can be frightening and overwhelming to deal with. With so much to sort through and try to salvage, it can be a stressful time. Items need to be sorted and the damaged area needs to be thoroughly cleaned and restored to avoid further damages. You may also have such a serious situation that you need to call experts to come and help you with the water damage. Follow these steps for some ideas to recover safely from water damage.
1. Prepare to safely clean the mess. Begin by turning off your electricity and power sources. Dealing with all of that water and active power lines and sockets is a recipe for disaster, so avoid this danger as much as possible. It is also a safe idea to get rid of all of the excess water that you can. Use buckets, towels, and mops to eliminate extra water. Move the water to an area where it will not flow back down into your home.
2. Sort your possessions. Take all items that have not been affected by water damage and move them to a dry location, whether that is another part of the house or a storage unit. You do not want to subject these possessions to any unnecessary damage. Take all garbage and items that cannot be salvaged and throw them away immediately to prevent clutter.
3. Ventilate the area. Open as many windows and doors as possible to allow air flow. If possible, have a generator operate a fan to circulate even more air. Fresh, moving air will slow down the process of mold or mildew forming, which can be tough to get rid of. It will also be easier to work without the smell or lack of oxygen.
4. Evaluate the situation. If you will need professional services to help clean or restore your belongings, make the phone call. It can be expensive, but the task of recovering from water damage can often be too much to handle on your own. You may even find that carpets, floors, or walls need to be replaced - so get a professional's services if necessary. Your insurance company may even have this covered.
5. Begin your repairs. If you will not be using a professional's services, begin finding ways that you can repair the damage yourself. Once you remove all of the excess water, scrub down your walls and furniture. Clean the carpets and upholstery, and leave other items to air dry. Check windowsills and other areas for water build-up, and remove the build-up quickly.
Remember to act cautiously, because neglecting to take safety measures can result in a situation much worse than just water damage. Stay thorough with your actions as well. Overlooking an area or item to clean can result in mold or mildew, which can cause sickness over time. Recovering from water and flood damage can be a huge job, but with the right approach and tools you can have your home looking like new.
