Eliminate Water Damage On Attics And Basements
Byron Zoucks
Air that is leaking from the house to the attic will cause moisture to form and will cause humidity in the attic, which can lead to mold and rotting. Some of the ways to stop water damage to the roof is to keep the gutters and downspouts free from leaves, twigs and other debris which prevent the proper drainage of water. Also make sure that water is draining from the roof in the correct manner. This is the best way to make sure there is not any damage to your attic. You should also make sure downspouts are free of leaves and other debris.
Roofs must have proper ventilation. This will help to reduce heat and moisture in the attic. There are preservatives available for certain types of roofs, which may help to stop the growth of mold and moss. It is also a good idea to keep trees that are close to the house trimmed. This will help to prevent them from rubbing up against the roof and they will also help from shading the roof, which can cause moisture. Some of the warning signs that there is water damage in the attic are broken, missing, curling, or cracked shingles and water stains on the ceiling.
To avoid extreme water damage to your home it is wise to check for signs of water damage on a regular basis. Look for signs of damage such as peeling paint and wallpaper, spots of mold, moisture on walls or the floor and a musty stale odor. Check the walls and floors for any sign of moisture. If the tile or wood floor feels warmer or cooler in certain spots it could be a sign of water damage.
Water damage in the basement is very common after a flood. Often it causes damage to flooring and walls and to items which are kept in the basement. It also causes odors which are the result from mold, mildew, and the lack of ventilation. Some of the most common signs of water damage in the basement are stains on the carpet, or white mineral deposits on stone or concrete. This is a sign that water is seeping through the wall. Rust stains are another sign of moisture in the basement, as rust after a flood can form quickly.
It is a good idea to check major appliances in the basement for signs of water damage. The washing machine hose should be checked for any fraying, cracking or bulging and should be replaced if it shows any damage because it could burst and cause further water damage. The water heater should be checked for any wet spots on the floor or a rusty tank. Air conditioners should be serviced at the start of the cooling season. The inspection should include cleaning the pan and drain line and any obstructions should be removed.
Water damage to attics and basements are common especially after a flood in your area. However, it is possible to avoid dangers and remove the damage if the right steps are taken.
