Cut Down The Holiday Drinking
Musa Aykac
Although drinking on holiday is a tradition, we have to consider the repercussions of what drunken behaviour can do to you. The most important aspect is that drinking while on holiday can invalidate your insurance. Yes, most insurance companies will not provide cover for yourself and your family if you have an accident while you are under the influence of alcohol. This may not be a big problem for people who are just relaxing on a sunny beach somewhere, as the chances of having a medical accident are fairly low. On more risky holidays is where the danger really starts to come in. For example, if you were to go skiing on a steep slope you will be very likely to end up hurting yourself, because the alcohol will make you clumsy. Most ski resorts are likely to do a breath test on the person before they are allowed on the slopes, as they want to eliminate injuries and they know they will be liable.
What usually occurs with travel insurance is that when you have an accident, your insurer will pay all of your medical fees once they have received a note from the treating doctor. If the note shows that levels of alcohol in the blood are higher than normal, the insurer will refuse to pay out, and you will be left liable for all the medical costs, which can be an exceedingly high amount especially when going to a private sector.
So all though you may want to go on holiday to drink day and night, but you should really think about some likely events that could happen to you while you are drunk. You should then stay away from dangerous places. For example if you were near a swimming pool I would move well away in case you fall in. If you were set to go sky diving I would not even touch a drop of alcohol as it may give you unprecedented courage in a very dangerous location. Staying safe should be your number one priority, eliminate all the dangers and enjoy your holidays full potential.
