Rememeber that amazing sound you hear when a fire work goes off. Now times that by 100 and keep it going throughout the night! That's what happens around guy fawkes night. Especially if you live near open land.
thankfully, I lived in a nice quiet area, nowhere near a park or open land where havoc could be caused. But still the sounds could be heard from far away. I have two children. They loved it, and begged me to get some for ourselves.
I went out and bought some sparklers and little fireworks for our garden. We were paving our garden and the skip hire company helping us had placed the skip on our driveway, blocking it up! We needed some way of removing the waste and skip hire seemed perfect.
the sparklers were all well and good, but only kept them quiet for about 2 minutes. They wanted some of the bigger stuff, like their friend vince had at school! Being a single mum is hard enough as it is, so I finally gave in, and toddled back to the shop and bought some heavy duty ones.
The skip was full, so the skip hire company came and picked it up, however the work was far from finished, so I requested another skip from the skip hire company. They delivered it the very next day. Who knew skip hire could be so easy!
I didn't know where to set off the fireworks, the garden was a no go area and the front had no room. It was a real dilemma by any standards.
This is where I had a blonde moment. Why not use the skip as a base in which to set off the firework? I'm sure the skip hire company wouldn't mind. And it's made out of robust material. It shouldn't set on fire. So there we had it. Skip hire was good for more than one thing!
I place the first firework in the skip. Set it alight and stood back with the kids. I was far away enough to be safe. Or so I thought. The idea went horribly wrong. The firework malfunctioned, and hit the side of the skip; it rebounded and headed straight for the house. If that wasn't enough, it flew through the open window, and the next thing I knew, the house was on fire!
Thankfully, none of us got hurt in the process, and the insurance covered the house. As for the skip hire company, they were not so understanding. Which to be honest is fair. It was entirely my fault. Never use a skip for fireworks!
