Make More Of An Impact With Your Backsplash
Mary Bosz
One element of good interior design is continuity. Creating a seamless visual throughout the home greatly enhances its overall appearance. Instead of feeling jolted moving from room to room, it's a soothing and delightful experience to feel the visual cohesion of a home. This can be achieved through color, patterns, and materials. In the kitchen and bathroom, a way to add seamlessness for a modern, sleek style is by carrying the countertop into the backsplash. Granite countertops, for instance, flow smoothly into a backsplash, giving high-profile style no matter where you live. Here are a few reasons to consider adding continuity with a backsplash.
Reason 1: Create Visual Seamlessness
As already noted, using the same material for the countertop and backsplash keeps the eye flowing smoothly from element to element. This is especially true if you're using a monochromatic color scheme. Using a similar color for the countertop, backsplash, and cabinetry will create one line of sight. This isn't always possible, but if you've chosen granite countertops, for example, you shouldn't have a problem matching or coordinating colors of these three elements.
Reason 2: Save Time and Money
Choosing the same material for the backsplash as for the countertop can save you time and money. Instead of spending double or more hours searching for two separate materials for the countertop and backsplash, spend half that settling on one material for both. It may also save you money in having to hire only one professional and in gas running from place to place to find and then buy what you need. You may also only need to coordinate one installation instead of two. Renovations are hectic and cutting down the number of decisions and separate materials to buy and then install may make a big difference.
Reason 3: Be Modern
The seamless, monochromatic look is popular in modern kitchens and bathrooms. It's not a difficult look to achieve and can be good for resale value. Using the same backsplash material as the countertop can be a good place to begin. Then, you can just choose cabinets in a similar tone. Or, choose a countertop/backsplash color that goes with your new or existing cabinets. It's an easy way to create a look straight out of a magazine or showroom. And keeping it simple with material and color choices means fewer design decisions and less running around searching for materials.
Backsplashes in the kitchen and bathroom heighten visual interest and act as a safeguard for your wall against water and grease. To simplify your life visually and in other ways, why not choose a backsplash that's the same material as the countertop? Doing so provides an aesthetically seamless look; it will save you time making one more material decision, and money on labor and the cost of running from store to store; and the modern appearance will please your eyes, keep decision-making to a minimum, and appeal to potential buyers. Three good reasons to consider your countertop material for the backsplash as well.
