McCarthy's son Evan was born in 2002, full of life and always smiling. But around age 2, Evan began having seizures, and thus began a seemingly endless series of doctors' visits. A neurologist finally delivered McCarthy the devastating diagnosis: Evan had autism.
Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S., affecting approximately 1 million Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in every 150 American babies will be born with autism. There is no known cure for this disease.
But McCarthy couldn't just settle for "no cure." Determined to do everything she could to improve her son's life and health, she began to conduct extensive research on autism which eventually led her to start Evan on a gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet. She supplemented this diet with ThreeLac, the Global Health Trax (GHT) flagship specialty probiotic product. This fungal and yeast-recovery/reduction product delivers beneficial microflora to the intestinal tract.
GHT recently sponsored a private celebrity fundraiser hosted by McCarthy and Jim Carrey. The event was to benefit Generation Rescue, an international, parent-led organization of scientists, physicians and volunteers who work to help over 15,000 children begin biomedical treatment for autism. This type of treatment views childhood neurological disorders as symptoms of underlying physical disorders, such as toxin build-up, food allergies, excessive yeast growth and gastrointestinal distress.
McCarthy has happily reported that Evan's health is much better since starting his GFCF diet. She recently wrote in an editorial for CNN, "We believe what helped Evan recover was starting a gluten-free, casein-free diet, vitamin supplementation, detox of metals, and anti-fungals for yeast overgrowth that plagued his intestines. Once Evan's neurological function was recovered through these medical treatments, speech therapy and applied behaviour analysis helped him quickly learn the skills he could not while he was frozen in autism."
She also believes that GHT ThreeLac was crucial in Evan's improvement, writing in her new book that ThreeLac "is the stuff that really made Evan excrete yeast and start talking more."
In addition to supporting Generation Rescue and incorporating GHT into her son's nutritional regimen, McCarthy's mission against autism has led her to become spokeswoman for Talk About Curing Autism, a support group for families with autism. McCarthy continues to be a tireless crusader for a cure to autism, and supports using nutrition to handle the disease.
