Amla fruit is acrid, cooling, refrigerant, diuretic, laxative, alexeteric, antipyretic, aphrodisiac alterant, tonic and trichogeneous. It is the richest natural source of Vitamin C. 100 gm. of Amla contains about 700 mg. of vitamin C, which is thirty times the amount found in oranges.In adition to Vitamin C, it also contains calcium, iron, protein, garlic and tannic acids, sugar, phosphorus, carbohydrates etc.
In Ayurveda the herb ashwagandha is believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-stress, anti-oxidant, rejuvenating, aphrodisiac and immune enhancing properties. It is considered as an adaptogen that stimulates the immune system and improves the memory. It also helps to fight against stress due to its anti-stress properties. It increases the count of white blood cells and prepares the body to produce antigens against various infections and allergies.
Amla is a wonder herb with numerous indications. Due to its sheet virya potency it is widely used in diseases caused by pitta disorders. It has found an esteemed place in ayurvedic preparations. Chawanprash, triphala and amlaki rasayan possess dominance of Amla. It is used to substitute vitamin C in disease like scurvy. It has actions on all the systems of the body.
It is very helpful in skin diseases as it has sheet virya (cold potency), it inhibits pitta dosha and thus helps in getting relief from it as all the skin disorders are caused by pitta dominance. Regular use of Amla promotes glow on skin and delays wrinkles or loosening of skin. Good results have been found in eczema.
Amla is a fruit used without seed mostly in dried form but in Chyavanprash fresh Amla is used. Amla consist of sheet (cold) virya potency and is guru (heavy) and ruksh (dry) in property. Amla contains five rasa i.e. madhur, amal, katu, tickt and kashaya. Amla chemically contains ascorbic acid, phyllembin, phyllemblic acid, gallic acid, ellagic acid, zeatin, Z riboside, Z nucleotide, and tannins.
The use of Amla fruit (Emblica officinalis, Phyllanthus emblica) has been a fundamental part of India's practice of Ayurvedic Medicine for centuries, and is one of the planet's most concentrated sources of natural vitamin C.1 And despite centuries of use in Ayurvedic medicine, most health-savvy consumers are still unaware of just how concentrated it truly is. So to help put things in better perspective, let's do some simple comparisons.
Amalaki is helpful in promoting the absorption of food in the body. Due to cold properties of Amalaki, it promotes the proper absorption of water and other nutrients in the intestines. It is also helpful in maintaining the proper peristaltic movements in the body.
It is also very useful in controlling blood sugar level. Prepare a mixture of amla, jamun and bitter gourd powder (equal quantities). Take one teaspoonful of this mixture once or twice a day to make your diabetes under control.
