Spending the holidays out of town with your pet is an enjoyable activity. This need not be difficult for both pet and pet owners. If you are a pet owner wanting to bring along your pet during a holiday trip, by all means, you can do so. However, you must prepare for it ahead of time to avoid any problems along the way. Enumerated below are some tips you can follow if you plan on bringing along your pet on a trip.
1. Be very familiar with the pet you are bringing with you. You must know exactly your pet's habits, food preference, and moods if possible. An animal may experience motion sickness just like humans. You can try driving around the neighborhood with your pet to allow him to settle in a moving vehicle.
2. Have a talk with your veterinarian. Tell him about your upcoming trip. He might have some tips for you on how to care for your pet in case something happens unexpectedly during the trip. Inform him about your daily drive around the neighborhood as form of preparation.
3. Arm yourself with information regarding the trip you are going to take-the transportation, accommodation, food, companions, and other important information. There are hotels nowadays which cater to pet owners and their pets. There are hotel amenities specifically built for pets. If you do not know any of these hotels, you may try surfing the internet and look if they are situated near your travel destination. You may also try searching in your local libraries for listings.
4. Make your pet as comfortable as possible during the trip. To do this, you may bring with you familiar items your pet uses. These are blankets, toys, pillows, or any item he can easily identify. In this manner, you pet will feel secure even in unfamiliar surroundings.
5. Skip water and food immediately before boarding the vehicle you would take for the trip. As with humans, eating or drinking sometimes upset the stomach thereby making travel uncomfortable. You may feed your pet 30 minutes or 1 hour prior to departure.
6. If you are traveling with your pet and have your own car, plan your stops ahead of the trip. You can choose a nice park along the way where you can stop for a while and have a picnic before resuming. This will give you and your pet time to relax in between a very long and tiring drive.
More tips:
- Get a written clearance from your veterinarian prior to the day of the trip. This will surely come handy in case something arise unexpectedly.
- In conjunction with the above reminder, be sure that your pet has received all the shots needed because if not you should never leave without accomplishing this first. Tag your pet for proper identification.
- Just like children, pets should also be securely fastened whenever you take public or private transportation. It decreases the probability of endangering both the pet and the pet owner's lives.
To avoid occurrence of any untoward incident with your pet, be sure to plan your trip ahead not only with your accommodations in mind but also your pet's as well.
