Making The Perfect Deck
Adam Peters
As popular as decks and screened porches are today, you may live in a home that doesn't have enough space for either. If this is the case, the perfect choice may be a roof deck, which will still allow you the enchanting views of the countryside or city, whichever the case may be. The perfect addition to a roof deck is sunburst deck railings. These add a touch of style and decor to your deck and your entire home.
Building an above the ground or roof deck is the perfect alternative if your yard or home doesn't have enough space for a ground level deck. Most older homes have a second story or attic, which give them the potential for building a roof deck. If your attic has a window, it can easily be converted to a door under which you can install a roof deck. Another possibility is turning unused attic space into family room with a door leading to the outdoors, another place to position your roof deck. Regardless of how small your home may be, there are always ways to make an attractive deck as part of your home.
Roofs on your home are either flat or sloped and you can build a roof deck on either style of roof. Although sloping roofs are more challenging because you need additional supports for leveling as opposed to flat roofs which only need blocking. It's important to take precautions that you do not damage the roof when installing a roof deck. If you feel you may need to install new roofing, make sure it's done before you install a roof deck on a sloped roof, as it will be more difficult later. A roof deck is great for giving you the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine by just walking through the door. Very little is as enjoyable as sitting on the deck sipping a cool drink or reading a good book.
Building a roof deck can be very simple even if your roof is sloping. An important factor to keep in mind is to make sure that the roof is sturdy enough to withstand the extra weight from the roof deck. Whether your roof deck is simple or has decorative sunburst deck railings, you'll want to make your landscape around your roof deck look attractive. Trees and shrubs make good shading around your deck as well as being attractive. Don't place them where they are going to obstruct your view, however.
The cost of your roof deck may be cheap or expensive depending on how big you want it to be. Even if you have a very large home, you don't need a roof deck larger than you'll need for you and your family.
