It's become easier over the last few years to create video on your computer. There are numerous programs that you can use, and it's become quite simple to where almost anyone can do it. But some of the limitations are your computer itself. What can you do to ensure that you can use your computer to create videos?
First, a good indicator of your ability to produce videos is the age of your computer. If your computer has been collecting dust in your den for the last 12 years, most likely you're not going to be able to upgrade it enough to be able to process videos.
Second, you'll need a good video card. While it is technically possible to create video with an onboard video card(meaning one that is part of an all-in-one motherboard), in most instances you'll want a current video card with 128MB or more of video memory. Many video cards today come with 512MB or more of video memory.
Third, find out how much memory is installed in the computer. Just a few years ago 512MB was pretty standard in computers. But, for video processing, it's best if you have between 2-4GB of memory. Also make sure you get high quality memory as that can make a pretty big difference in the speed and reliability in the work you perform, especially for memory intensive tasks like video processing.
Fourth, the processor speed. You'll want a computer that has a fairly decent processor that can handle the workload you'll be putting on it. Even the bottom of the line processors sold today are better than top of the line processors sold 5 years ago, so in many cases age is a larger factor than anything else.
Fifth, how much hard drive space do you have? Videos take up a ton of space. So, you'll want to maintain a pretty large hard drive so that you can keep track of all of the videos that you have created. These days it's not uncommon for high end computers to have 1,000GB's or more(also known as a Terrabyte). For most common users at the very minimum a 250GB Hard Drive would be a necessity.
We've tried to maintain the order of importance in the above list. In the end however it's a balancing act between economical upgrades versus the viability of purchasing a brand new computer anyway.
A good computer, and all that it entails is essential to processing videos on your computer. When you have an efficient, well running machine, you're much more likely to be able to create videos quickly with less stress. By following the above guidelines, you're much more likely to have the computer that fits that bill.
