A Guide To Personal Safety On Planes
Dave Terry
Where is the best seat on a plane from a safety perspective?
It really doesn't matter where you sit. When a plane crashes there are a number of factors that can cause passenger injury or death. Although it may seem like the seat nearest the escape door would offer give you a better chance of survival, often the occupants of these seats are trampled in the rush to escape.
What is the best way to prepare for an evacuation or the loss of cabin pressure?
With the case of evacuation by the emergency slides, the best thing to do is find out where the exits are, pay attention to the safety drill given by the flight stewards, and wear clothes which will not rip the inflatable slides. If you can, avoid wearing high heeled shoes. When the oxygen masks come down, your number one priority is to put on your own mask. When a cabin loses pressure, you run the risk of loss of consciousness if you fail to put on your mask quickly. It is more likely that you will be able to help children put their mask on, than vice versa, so put yourself first.
Which airlines are the safest?
Although some airlines have better safety records than others, these statistics can be misleading, as airlines differ widely in the amount of flights that they provide. A more useful indicator of the safety of an airline is the safety record of the national aviation authority that they have to answer to. Operators of large passenger aircraft in major industrialized countries have to adhere to the strictest safety regulations. While airlines that operate smaller planes have the option of operating under the same rules, smaller planes are not certified to the same standards as the bigger ones. The airports and air traffic control system have to adhere to the same type of regulations as major airlines. However, if an airline is infamous for poor customer service and frequent delays, then you should maybe consider using another operator
Are some aeroplanes safer than other ones?
All aircraft have to adhere to the same set of safety regulations as others in its class. If an accident occurs with a particular model, the civil aviation authorities in the major industrialized countries will as a rule require that the issue be addressed in all relevant aircraft models. For example, fatal airline accidents due to wind shear in the 1970s and 1980s led to investigations into the causes of this phenomenon and changes in the way flight crews were trained which has made air travel safer for everyone.
