Instrumental Practice:
Open the door to musical experiences with the WHY, the WHAT, the WHEN, the WHERE, and the HOW of music practice
The art of music making is a true production of beauty in form, in harmony and in expression of emotion. However, to get there is quite a feat in itself. The most acclaimed of music professionals still practice and rehearse. So then the questions remain, how does one accomplish this goal? What are the tools needed? Realize that the way to perfection in music is practice, practice, practice.
HOW to practice: Set your objective for each session. An objective in which you can connect to a long-range goal. Do not stray from the objective until you are satisfied with what you have done. Do not be distracted by new problems or challenges. Be sure to practice comfortably. That is to say - STOP - when you become frustrated. Come back when you are mentally fresh and alert. Use the elements of music as a guide to creating the objectives assigned (i.e. melody, harmony, rhythm, sound, etc.).
WHAT to practice: Everyone has a limited amount of time for practice. Be certain that you make the best use of that time by practicing only those areas and issues that need your attention.
* ?If what you hear in the practice room sounds pretty good, you're probably not practicing the right stuff.? William Vachianno
WHEN to practice: One should practice on a regular schedule, daily if at all possible. Schedule specific times during the week when you will practice. For each session, again set a specific objective. If you must miss a scheduled session, be certain to schedule yourself a ?make-up session.? Use a combination of brief sessions (35-45 minutes) and lengthy sessions (2-2 1/2 hours). Rehearse at a time of the day when you are alert and focused.
WHERE to practice: Find an isolated, out of the way place where you will be free from distractions. Ideally, one should create an environment which specifically yours for music making. Your practice area should be well-lit, and equipped with everything you need to reach your objectives.
Examples of Musical Equipment:
* music dictionary
* metronome
* tuner
* music stand
* tape recorder
* comfortable chair/stool (that supports positive posture)
WHY do we practice: The practice room is a place for one to enhance their ability, learn more repertoire, and help you exceed in music. There is also the old adage that the practice room is where one learns their part, and the rehearsal room is where you go to learn everyone's part (to ?re-hear? in rehearsal).
Unfortunately, music is not something that just happens overnight, but it is something that everyone can appreciate in their own way, their own favorite genre, or even their own compositions. So strive for your goals, meet your objectives, perform your best and also practice. You can find out more helpful hints on music, practicing and instrument information at www.malletmass.com.
