Atlanta's Newest City?Dunwoody
Julian Bryce
Dunwoody is the latest of the many suburbs of Atlanta to claim independence through residential voting and establish itself as an official city. Although the City of Dunwoody officially began operations on December 1, 2008, the area was founded in the early 1830's and named for Major Charles Dunwoody. The first church and private school in unincorporated Dunwoody was Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church established in 1829. The still active church is located at the intersection of Roberts Drive and Spalding Drive.
Dunwoody is located in Dekalb County just north of the Atlanta city perimeter, making it convenient for those who commute to the city for work and for weekends out. It is bordered by Sandy Springs to the west, Chamblee to the south, Roswell to the north and Norcross to the east. Although it is just a few miles north of downtown Atlanta's cultural options, the suburb offers residents quieter neighborhoods and more affordable housing, making it a popular choice among growing families and first time home buyers.
Being part of Dekalb County, Dunwoody school aged children may attend Kingsley, Vanderlyn or Austin elementary schools, Peachtree Middle School and Dunwoody High School as designated by the Atlanta Public School zones. Nearby private academy educational options include Deo Preparatory School, Weber School, Marist High School and New Atlanta Jewish Community High School.
Dunwoody's commercial area is centered around GA Hwy 400 and Perimeter Mall. Shopping, dining and numerous entertainment options populate the bustling mall area and even attract city dwellers away from in-town options. But turn off of the main streets and you'll find tree-lined neighborhoods and quaint communities where neighbors may enjoy weekend block parties and afternoon strolls with their children.
Dunwoody is a great option for first time home owners, expanding families and retirees. The area is close enough to drive in to the city for a night out with friends but far enough away from downtown congestion to enjoy the relaxing serenity of the suburbs. Being the newest city in the metro area, Dunwoody is welcoming both people moving out of the city for a quieter, suburb life as well as those who want to get a little closer in.
