Liposuction: Is It Right For You Or Not?
Abigail Aaronson
Almost everyone has a part of their body that they would like to change or reshape. Plastic surgeons have created liposuction for just such areas where there are hard-to-shed fat deposits. This procedure has become a big hit in the cosmetic surgery industry, but how do you know if it is right for you and whether you are right for it? There are actually several key factors that can help you determine the answers to these questions.
First, you must realize that liposuction is not a cure for being overweight. It has not been proven effective as a weight loss strategy, as a solution for obesity, or for smoothing out cellulite. You are a good candidate for liposuction if you are currently no more than 25 pounds from your desired weight and if you do not have frequent swings in weight. It is good if you have a spot or two on your body you'd like reshaped by removing the fat. For women, these spots tend to include their stomachs, thighs, and buttocks. Many overwhelmingly opt to reshape the extra skin above their hips, otherwise known as "love handles". Getting liposuction on a few spots will not dramatically reduce your weight, but it can give you a more attractive look in problem areas.
Second, it is important that you are in generally good health and physical condition. Certain health conditions can increase the risks associated with the surgery. If you have a clotting disorder, heart problems, seizures, diabetes, hernias, or immunodeficiency disorders then you cannot be considered fit for the procedure. Smokers and those who are obese will not typically be considered for liposuction either. Any use of several different types of medications can also complicate or disqualify you from a liposuction procedure. These include drugs like aspirin, anticoagulants or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as these may lead to excessive bleeding during and after the surgery. There are also drugs that you might be prescribed, that can interact and interfere with the anesthetics used in liposuction to prevent you from being eligible.
Another factor to consider before going further with the procedure is the elasticity of your skin and similarly, your age. The older you get, the less elastic your skin is, thereby making liposuction less effective. Though you can still get rid of the unwanted fat deposits, the skin in the targeted area may become loose and wrinkled. If getting rid of the fat is more important to you than some wrinkled skin, then this may indeed be a good option for you. And no matter what your age, you should check into what type and size of liposuction cannulas your surgeon would be using. Cannulas are the metal fat-sucking tubes used in the procedure and the smaller they are, the smoother and more natural the results will be.
Finally, you may be a good candidate if you have realistic expectations about the outcome and limitations of the surgery. This procedure is not a magic wand that will give you a perfectly thin, smooth, toned body. If you understand the scope of the procedure and the effort that will be involved on your part in the form of exercise and healthy eating to reinforce the results, you will possibly benefit from a liposuction surgery.
