A Paradise Found For Pirates
Anna Stenning
'Ahoy there Matey!' is probably the best pirate saying that can be remembered in association with the Caribbean Islands. That and pirate rum, all of which make for a unique utopia that is Barbados. When stepping onto the sparkling white and crystalline sand tickling in between your toes, it is almost a dreamland of sunshine haven and warm deep blue sea, housing a kingdom of relaxed friendly locals, luxury Barbados hotels overlooking beautiful sceneries and holding plenty of exotic sightseeing attractions.
Staying in one of their refreshing and relaxing Barbados hotels is an added bonus to this paradise island. As most people would like to believe it to be fictional (though in most parts fiction based) pirates did exist and true to their words the aptly named blockbuster hit 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was not a lie. Many pirates probably did not possess a hook for a hand, nor would they have encountered witches named Calypso or a giant sea monster known as the kraken. However they were at the time underground criminalised elite.
Pirates were much more than fantasized and loved heroine of our imaginary mind, in fact they were outlaws and terrorised many of the locals in the Caribbean, with their main base in Tortuga. Other known names for pirates were buccaneers or corsairs, which distinguished them from their bases. They were in short thieves who operated on the sea. They were glorified infamous seafarers, who spent most of their time trading stolen goods.
Barbados was one of the places that pirates operated, with many of them drinking rum hence the long time association with rum and pirates. Two of the most famous pirates hailed to have been part of the piracy generation were Stede Bonnet and Sam Lord. Both pirates were considered to have a strange method of piracy, with the latter being renowned for overtaking other pirate ships and acquiring their contents. Both pirates are celebrated on this island, attracting tourists to the neighbouring island of the Dominica, one of the set locations of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film.
Aside from the long history of the pirate invasion in Barbados, it has now become one of the most sought after holiday dream location. However, one thing that stands out of this island is the stunning Barbados hotels, both affordable and luxurious. Beach weddings and anniversary functions are a common feature for the hotels, making it one of the few places that people would idealise as the perfect romantic spot.
In the event of your own curiosity settling in on this seemingly luscious island of cocktails and friendly party-goers, the pirate theme does run in some of the hotels making it a family fun spot. The Jolly-Roger is a place for many visitors to actually experience the legendary 'walk the plank' punishment. Staff on board the tourist attraction ship are dressed in their best pirate attire and take on the role of the evil pirate, gently pushing you into the clear blue and warm waters.
For people looking for a more relaxed pirating experience will enjoy the pirate themed golf course, to which children will enjoy the fun of dressing up as pirates and trying out their own miniature golf course.
