Why Is Finding An Option For Heroin Treatment So Difficult?
Todd Lange
People who have had to find an option for heroin treatment know how difficult it is to find the right kind of solution. There are many reasons that make heroin treatment difficult, and searching for a solution that is suitable to the condition the person is in is no less simple. One of the main reasons why this treatment search is difficult is because of the very strong nature of the addiction itself. Here we analyze some of those situations.
Heroin is one of the most addictive drugs known to humankind. This substance is an opioid. Opioids are known to directly attack the central nervous system of humans as soon as they are introduced into the body. They will target specific areas of the central nervous system, especially located in the brain. As soon as heroin is introduced in the body, it will have this triggering stimulus. It will make the brain of the person release extensive amounts of the hormone dopamine, which is responsible for the sensation of pleasure in the human body. In short, when the person takes in heroin, he or she feels the immediate rush of pleasure.
This is what is equated with the euphoria of heroin consumption. When heroin addicts consume the substance, this is the feeling they are trying to chase. Since the feeling is so much ingrained in the constitution of the body, it becomes very difficult to make the person come out of the craving for substance. This is one of the prime reasons why heroin treatment is so very difficult.
Even if the body of the person wants to stop using the substance, the brain does not allow it to happen. The brain will continuously get back to the temptation for heroin and ask the body to consume it. In most cases, this urge will be so strong that the body will certainly succumb to it. This is why the person is not able to shake off the heroin addiction even if he or she wants to. It takes all they can for the treatment providers to bring heroin addicts to a lower level of dependency.
This is the genuine health-based problem that arises in heroin treatment of an individual. But there are several practical problems involved too. Here is a list of some of them.
1.Most states that have a heroin treatment program have several variations of it. There are programs that are inpatient and outpatient, programs that are with detox or without it, programs that are completely based on the rehab pattern or programs that follow a more medical approach, programs that handle a person's problems on an individual basis or some that use a more group-like or even community approach, etc. These variations exist in order to make the person choose the program that is most suitable for him or her. However, for someone who is not quite well aware of how addiction treatment program works in the state and what the relative benefits of these different programs are the selection certainly becomes difficult. This can be a deterrent for them in finding the right program, or it might make them end up with a program that is not appropriate to what their body demands.
2.The second program is with choosing the right kind of medicinal approach. There are two forms of medicinal therapies for heroin addiction treatment. These are methadone and buprenorphine. In previous days, methadone was the drug of choice. This substance, which is an opioid itself, was administered to the patients so that they could forget the craving for heroin. This was quite a workable concept, but methadone itself is habit-forming and phasing it out from the person's lifestyle was indeed a difficult affair.
Today though methadone treatment is still employed to a large extent, buprenorphine has arisen as a very suitable choice. Buprenorphine is an opioid too, but less habit-forming than methadone is and it can be easily phased out from the person's system. Hence, more and more heroin treatment centers are now using the buprenorphine mode of treatment, which can also be provided on an outpatient basis. This has made heroin treatment more convenient in today's times.
However, if you are selecting a treatment option for your needs, you must do good research on the relative merits and demerits of methadone and buprenorphine and then decide which of these you would like to go ahead with.
These are the two main difficulties in planning heroin treatment. That is the reason it is strongly advised that you get as educated on the subject as possible and get professional counseling when you go ahead with the treatment.
