Fire Escape Methods For Kids
Rachel Yoshida
Whenever there is a fire in a home where children live, this is the first concern that an adult will have. Knowing that the children are safe and that they get out safely is the most important thing for any parent. There is no way that most parents will leave a burning home when their children are still inside. There are times in a fire when it might not be possible for you to reach your children and this is why it is so important that they are taught exactly what to do when there is a fire in the home.
First of all, they need to know to not panic. Sometimes children can keep a cooler head in a crisis than adults. When they know there is a fire, they need to know to shout to you to let you know that for the moment they are alright. Some parents do not let their children sleep with the door closed, but actually if a fire breaks out in the home, they could be safer if their door is closed to keep the fire and smoke out as long as possible.
Kids that panic easily might be tempted to hide in the closet or under the bed. This is a really bad idea. If they are overcome by smoke and can not communicate any longer, it can make it much more difficult for you or a fire fighter to find them. They need to know that getting out, not hiding is most important.
They need to know to test the door for heat before they open it. If it is hot, they should keep it closed. If it is not hot, they can open it cautiously and see if they can see you or an open way out of the home. If smoke is too heavy, they need to know to crawl on the floor to prevent choking. Sometimes it is not safe for them to try and get out the door, so the window needs to be an option. Buy a fire escape ladder for each bedroom and make sure they know how and when to use it. These ladders are collapsible and can save their life. They should also be taught to never go back into a burning home for a pet or anything else.
Losing a child in a fire is one of the most heart wrenching things a parent can experience. Teaching them what to do in a fire in case you can not get to them can be one of the most important things they ever learn. Make sure you have taken care of this essential lesson.
