FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT QUERCUS OAK
Shipra Kaul
Quercus is a latin word which means oak tree. Quercus oak is a seasoned oak which is very durable and long lasting as compared to other timbers. Oak wood is known to be a hard wood and has evolved in different climatic conditions throughout the world and is being used since ancient times. There are almost 600 varieties of oak trees found all over the world.
Quercus oak is used in making stylish fences for the garden. Usually it is made from the heart of the tree which lasts the longest. There are several types of quercus oak of deciduous variety like Quercus palustris, Quercus acutissima, Quercus phellos, Quercus Alba, Quercus nigra, Quercus laevis, Quercus michauxii, Quercus shummardii, Quercus rubra, Quercus falcate and Quercus stellata. Evergreen oaks are Quercus laurifolia and Quercus hemisphaerica. The most famous semi evergreen oaks are Quercus virginiana and Quercus geminate.
Oak wood is very strong, hard wood and is resistant to insect and fungal attack due to the high tannin content in it. Oak also looks so beautiful due to the natural and unique characteristic of attractive grain markings. Quercus robur and Quercus petraea were used in construction of ships and in construction of timber framed European buildings in the 19th century. This shows how strong and hard is the quality of quercus oak. Oak wood is mostly used in making furniture, flooring and timber frame buildings and also for veneer production. Another fascinating fact about oak wood is that barrels made from Quercus robur and Quercus petraea are used to store wines and can give wine different dimensions of taste based on the type of oak used. Oak barrels are charred before wine is kept in them and it contributes to color, aroma, and taste and imparts a desirable oaky vanillin flavor to the drinks.
So this gives us a fair idea as to how many different varieties of oak can be found. The though would be certainly crossing your mind as to what type of oak would be best suitable for the home, keeping the temperature and climatic condition in mind. For this the best suggestion would be to do some research on the net or go to reputed oak manufacturing companies who would surely give the right suggestion.
