High-class Escapes In London's Belgravia
Andrew
Situated just a short distance from the Queen's very own Buckingham Palace, Belgravia is a neighbourhood of central London and one of the capital's most fashionable residential districts. Despite its central location, which sees Pimlico Road run to the south and Sloane Street to the west, Belgravia is a relatively quiet district that offers a relaxing escape, whilst still being situated in the heart of London.
The area of land that is now Belgravia was originally inherited by the Grosvenor family, and was known as the Five Fields in medieval times. During the 18th century, it was nothing more than a wasteland used for grazing sheep. At this time, it was a dangerous place to wander after dark and was known for violent robberies committed by highway men.
The catalyst for transforming this barren wasteland into the thriving residential district came when Buckingham Palace was built nearby and the royal court relocated there. At this time, Lord Grosvenor deceived to develop the area, and over the next 30 years built fashionable residential houses with high quality services such as sewers, gas lighting, and well constructed streets and pavements. The area was originally protected by gates, designed to keep out the 'undesirables' and heavy traffic.
Belgravia has a long pedigree of notable residents. Amongst the many famous faces who have resided in the district include former British Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin and Arthur Chamberlain, American philanthropist George Peabody, classical composers Chopin and Mozart and novelist Ian Fleming. More recent residents of note include Margaret Thatcher, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson and actress and writer Joan Collins.
Belgravia's architecture is characterised by grand terraces of white stucco houses, many of which are no longer residences, but instead home embassies, charity headquarters and professional institutions. In keeping with its exclusive clientele, Belgravia's house prices are among the most expensive in the world and large houses with gardens cost as much as ?10 million.
Belgravia is deemed one of the most beautiful areas of London, dotted with leafy avenues, old houses, and charming pubs. There are also some artist studios and shopping streets here, but for more chic boutique shopping visitors can head to the area of Knightsbridge, just yards away.
Belgravia is an ideal place to spend a few days and soak up some of London's high class living. There are several upmarketĀ , set in luxurious buildings which are modern and efficient, yet in keeping with the area's elegance that gives it such charm.
