Crocheting, Making The Right Choices.
Shahar Boyayan

Once you start to work the yarn it just doesn't
look right. Then the whole thing ends up shoved
in a bag never to surface again. Yeah, you know
just what I'm talking about!
The up side is, this is a problem that can be
avoided. Whenever you start a new crochet project
you have three choices to make; pattern, yarn,
and hook size. By taking the time to complement
these three things to one another you will start
to have a much higher success rate with your work.
1. Pattern
First things first, what are you going to make?
This is probably the easiest part of the equation.
Just make sure you choose a pattern that fits
your current skill level. Most books are pretty
good at explaining their special stitches it just
takes time to learn the lingo. If you can't find
what you want at the store there are wonderful on-
line sites that offer a wide range of free
patterns.
2. Yarn
Make sure that the weave of yarn you choose will
be flattering to your pattern. Most stores have
sample swatches made up of each type, pay
attention to these. This is how your finished
product will look and feel. Also pay attention to
how hard the yarn will be to work. For instance,
eyelash yarn is bad to knot while you are working
it and yarns with looser weaves are harder to
hold together.
3. Hook
Your hook has to fit both your pattern and yarn
choice. Most garment patterns will give you a
recommended hook size, but that is for the type
of yarn they used for the sample. The size of
your hook needs to be based on the weight of your
yarn. Too small and the yarn will look pulled,
too large and it will look messy.
Just follow these three easy steps in order and
your project will be everything you've ever
dreamed of!
