How Gay And Lesbian Pride Month Has Evolved
Andrew Gibson
As gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transsexuals (GLBT) comprise one of many groups in our diverse society that have been, and continue to be discriminated against on a regular basis, it only makes sense that there exist an observance such as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. June of each year is designated a time to revel in the presence and the spirit of the GLBT communities around the country and actively organize public participation in speaking out against discrimination and dehumanizing activities based on sexual orientation.
Many people now send free e-cards to each other to raise awareness of these problems and help break down the discriminations that have previously existed. It also marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riot of June 28, 1969, an event marking the historical beginning of the eminent Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights movement. This observance is a necessary step towards breaking down the overwhelmingly tangible divisions in our society and an encouragement to all groups of people to unite behind the development of open-minded, wholesome attitudes pertaining to one another.
It is vital for people to feel free to express their sexuality, considering what a pronounced effect this has on who they are as an individual and to celebrate the extensive social, cultural, historical, and other impact of GLBT individuals on society as a whole. Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is typically intermingled with gatherings, marches, and other events, often of a social nature, but even more prominently marked with a strong political agenda of egalitarianism and tolerance and great numbers of all ages, shapes, colours, sizes, sexual orientations assembling to support those issues.
Rather than oppressing each other and therefore ourselves, it is for the greater benefit of people all over the world that we celebrate and take full advantage of human diversity, during Gay and Lesbian Pride Month and every day of the year. A good way of expressing this support is to send free e-cards to friends and families making them aware of the issues that are at stake.
The Stonewall Inn was a private club in the heart of Manhattan's West Village that was raided by the police on June 28, 1969 for serving liquor without a license. The gay clientele of the establishment resisted the raid, which sparked a media flurry about the homosexual communities in New York City, and advanced public articulation of GLBT issues. In June 1999, the National Park Service added the Stonewall Inn, as well as the park and neighbourhood streets in its proximity, to the National Register of Historic Places.
Denmark became the first country in the world to recognize same sex unions in 1989. Since this time many other countries have started to recognise the rights of same sex unions. There now exist a great range of free e-cards that help celebrate GLBT. These free e-cards are very easy to send as they can be selected on the internet and sent directly to any email address in the world.
