Home improvements are undertaken for a variety of reasons, and is only limited by budget constraints and personal preferences. Every part of a home can be re-moddled, from roof to floor. But the lowly bathroom is now attracting very special attention from bothe developers and home owners. Why?

Is a bathroom a room for just a bath or a room for personal rituals?

One of the primary areas that attract the designer's eye in home improvements is the bathroom.

The bathroom has certainly evolved -- from an unimportant discrete place at the back of the house to one that commands a dominant presence. It is no longer merely just functional, but doubles as a sanctuary where you can abandon pretenses, be yourself, and just tune out stress and tension.

Bathrooms today are designed with focus on fittings, but the trend in both initial design and home improvements is rapidly moving towards a design which pivots around the needs of the user.

Alloys F. Dornbracht, one of Germany's premier manufacturers of high-end sanitaryware and bathroon fittings predicts that the form and function of bathrooms will merge with the bedroom and occupy pride of location. It will adopt an open concept, with the bathroom occupying pride of place and opening up into the bedroom.

Many bathroom designs today give prominanc to aesthetic needs as well. Bathrooms command panoramic views in high-rise buildings, while offering a sweeping view of gardens in landed properties. Of course, relocating a bathroom is certainly not an easily applicable option in home improvement plans, but perhaps adding a window would make a difference.

Besides an astonishing variety of internal fixtures and fittings, mood lighting and jacuzzies, modern design evolution now offers such luxuries as the Rain Sky shower system, with a sky image ceiling panel, and a shower head that lets you choose between a gentle drizzle or a tropical deluge.

Modern technology has contributed infra-red to turn taps on and off with hand motion. Applied electronics offers customized balance between light, sound and water flow, to create a soothing and experience.

The bathroom, according to V & B, a 260 year old ceramic sanitaryware manufacturer, defines the modern bedroom as a place to pamper mind, body and soul. And for the health fanatics there's the Steam Cube - cublicals that combine steam with aromatherapy for a choice between stimulation or calmness and an overhead sprinkler that simulates a tropical rainshower.

Bathroom design or re-moddling today merges aesthetics with function, form with purpose and homespun with artistry and elegance.
