Balloon Sinuplasty - Helping You Breathe Easier
Wolfgang Jaegel
Sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus lining, is a common and often painful condition caused by bacterial and/or viral infections or structural issues such as a blockage of the sinus opening. The symptoms can include severe headaches, a loss of smell, congestion, discharge of discoloured mucus and even difficulty breathing.
In most instances, these symptoms can be treated by a regular doctor with non-invasive medical techniques such as antibiotics or topical nasal steroid sprays. However, in some cases such treatments fail to work and the patient may be referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist.
In the past, these experts would have treated the condition of chronic sinusitis with surgery, opening up the sinus passages to physically remove the blockage. Whilst effective, it was an invasive procedure which could result in scarring of the sinus lining, which, in turn, could lead to a recurrence of the problem.
Fortunately, for those suffering from this condition, the last couple of years have seen the development of a new technique called Balloon Synoplasty. It was pioneered in the United States, by a long-term sinusitis sufferer who realised that the existing medical technique, of using miniature balloons to open up collapsed or blocked blood vessels, could be transferred to treating chronic sinusitis.
The procedure involves using a small, flexible, Sinus Balloon Catheter to open up blocked sinus passageways, restoring normal sinus drainage and function. First, a guide wire is inserted through the nostrils along with a fluoroscope, which takes real time x-rays of the sinus, allowing the surgeon to identify the exact location of the blockage.
Next, a Sinus Balloon Catheter is inserted and positioned over the blocked sinus and inflated. As the sinus balloon expands, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
There are a number of benefits to this type of treatment compared to traditional, more invasive methods.
In fact, whilst recovery time varies with each patient, many people can return to normal activities within 24 hours. What's more the reduction in bleeding means the need for uncomfortable nasal packing can often be eliminated.
As well as aiding recovery time, Balloon Synoplasty appears to be more effective than traditional techniques, reducing the need for further treatment.
Whilst Balloon Synoplasty is still in its infancy it seems the positive benefits are already becoming clear. At last there is a safe and effective technique to relieve the pain and discomfort of chronic sinusitis, helping sufferers breathe more easily.
