So, how do we create our states? When you are motivated, how do you do that? How do you get motivated? When you are depressed, how do we create it? Understand that at any point of time your state is determined by 1) your physiology and 2) your internal representation.
Your physiology, or the way you use your physical body affects the state you are in. When you are depressed, it is because your breathing is at a certain place. Your body posture, your muscle tension, your facial expression all in a certain place.
When you are feeling motivated, excited, enthusiastic, guess what, your physiology is totally different. You know, you are breathing differently, you are moving differently and you have got a different look on your face.
If you were in a physiology of intense happiness or joy, you would be breathing very quickly, jumping up and down with a big smile on your face. In this state, would it be possible for you to feel depressed?
Of course not, go and check for yourself! Put a big smile on your face, stand up, breathe deeply, and try to feel depress. And you cannot do it. It is physically impossible to do it because of the way your brain and body is linked.
However, you must ensure that every aspect of the person's physiology is changed. Here is a checklist of physiological elements that would have an affect on a person's state.
The first thing is the person's posture. You got to change the posture.
The second thing is the tension in the muscles, the muscles in the arms, the muscles in the leg, plus the muscles in the body.
The third thing is the facial expression. Just by changing a bit of your mouth position can affect how you feel.
The other thing is eye movement and blinking. And breathing pattern is also important. How fast do you breathe, do you breath deeply, or are you breathing in a shallow manner?
And one thing that tremendously affects our state of physiology is the way through we use our voice. And if I spoke to you in a highly motivated and empowered tone, will I continue to be excited and want to share things with you. But if I started to speak in a lousy and disempowered manner and, tone and volume, pretty soon, both you and me, will fall asleep, alright?
Now, just by changing one or two elements will not create a state change. A lot of people think that physiology changes are the byproduct or the effect of a particular state.
Now, what you must know is that physiology also affects the state you are in. You cannot change one without changing the other.
The second thing that affects your state you are in is your internal representation.
Basically, this is to say how we internally think and represent what is going on around us is 'how do we represent the world in our heads
There are 2 basic ways to represent things in our mind.
The first is through seeing pictures, and the second is through hearing sounds. And a lot of the sound that we play in our head is our own internal voice.
By consciously shifting our physiology and taking control of our body as well as managing how to represent our internal representation, we can automatically change the states we are in.
