Do You Spend Too Much Money?
Rachel Yoshida
There are families all over our country who are feeling the sting and pinch of the economic strain that is sweeping over us. Some of the more optimistic people are still denying the fact that things are going to get worse, but right now we really do not have any evidence that they are going to get better any time soon either. In most instances it is better to be safe than sorry. Even the families that have not been that affected as yet, are using common sense and are beginning to try and cut back on some expenses they have.
One thing that eats away at all of our budgets is insurances. Life, health, auto, and home insurances must be maintained because they are either required by law or as with health and life insurance, something that is really needed. Even though you can not dispose of these expenses, you might go over all your policies and see if there are ways that you can adjust them in order to save on monthly or quarterly premiums. It might even be wise to change the company you are with if you can get the same coverage for a better rate elsewhere.
Too many automobiles can be an added expense your family can do without. Car maintenance, insurance, and payments can add up to a lot of monthly expense. It may not be possible for a family to have less than two vehicles, but if you have three, could you do without the third?
Extra activities for the kids can really add up to a lot of money, especially if a family has three or four children. You need to really weigh the enjoyment a child is actually getting from an activity like dance lessons, sports, or anything else against how much it costs. Sometimes parents will be guilty of placing their children in extra activities that the child really does not enjoy that much just for the sake of enriching their lives. You need to be sure it is your child that wants to do the activity and not just you trying to be a better parent.
Eating out is one of the biggest things that families spend extra money on. It might be hectic and tiring to prepare dinner at home every night, but when you think about having to make sure everyone is ready and then driving to and from a restaurant or fast food place, is it really any less tiring? Try to plans meals at home that require less preparation that are also good for you. Let the kids take part in the preparation and cleanup if they are old enough. You will probably enjoy spending time together like this more, eat healthier, and probably spend no more time doing it than eating out.
